Story Time: I saw Blink at Saturday Night Live

    What the Davey.

So you are suggesting against it then? For bands I think it's necessary. So much goes into it from positioning the mics to, equipment, mixing

All good info. My roommate once dropped everything, got a sound engineer degree, opened up a studio as his dream and while that's cool and all my God is he broke and struggling for years now. He's kind of lazy/sloppy too so I just don't see how that can work as your lead engineer. Unless you just want to record high school bands. But it seems you have to go in one to make it now unless your really good live act gets you noticed somewhere. Someone's self recorded/produced/mixed will never get picked up by a radio or anything, too much of that out there. I was just getting the idea from reading about that Amy Shark chick, she kept going in a studio and then eventually a song got picked up by radio there and got her semi-big. Seems like you have to nowadays to go anywhere, assuming your music is worth a damn. Too many friends I know will spend endless hours trying to do it themselves, push SoundCloud/Bandcamp/etc from their own mixes. But a guy I met does $50/hr and has a really good track record, bright guy/not a douche.

Has anyone actually ever gone in and spent money on studio time? It seems expensive and awkward to me, but damn would it up your chances with everything you'd have to think.

    REM vs Dave Matthews Band

See, I get this perspective. They have an insane drummer, violinist, others bandmates and Dave is just decent, nothing spectacular. But Dave is the organizer/initiator/hoppus, whatever you want to call him. It creates a good chemistry, mix. If it weren't for him they'd be still playing with their talent at bars in their small town. That's why it works though, you need the poppier guy surrounded by the talent. It's not much different than Travis needing Mark and Tom to get cast in the limelight and 'wasting' his talent on pop punk songs. Have you heard of Dream Theater? Yeah, they're all immense talents with no room to breath, you don't remember any of their songs because it doesn't sound good. I said this in the other thread. Most people hate on DMB, just like blink, because of much of their fans. DMB for whatever reason attracts a lot of frat guys who smoke weed at the concert and think it's their thing. Blink writes a lot of dirty dick jokes and yet attracts a zillion teenage girls and emos. DMB writes a lot about unjust/irony in society, deeper songs, yet attracts a zillion trashy frat bros. It's random

If you count descendants era than yes it gets more difficult. I was thinking more Dookie onwards. Who the fuck is rocksound.com anyways? I still don't get why Self Titled isn't placed.

    Best Artist of our Generation?

Welp, I think we've settled it then. I have better taste in music than you guys. But really, I will die on it. The Dave hate does baffle me but oh well, at least it's not Rise Against. REM and DMB are both top notch music to me, and hugely successfully, admittedly REM more so. I didn't know about the Cobain stuff, so that was interesting. Imo people just hate DMB primarily because of the fans (frat bros, etc), similar to reasons people hated on Blink, that's why I'll defend it. They're very similar to blink, really poppy big hits but have some really great other stuff you need to come across.

    Again. Blink 182.

    REM vs Dave Matthews Band

That's entirely your opinion, being able to maintain such a large following and still sell out shows to this day says otherwise to quite a few people.

    REM vs Dave Matthews Band

I really thought of all people, Daveyjones would have had my back on this one. Maybe not DMB over REM but just DMB respect in general.

I would hope they wouldn't since that bus would smell like old dads. and Carter Beauford is widely considered one of the best drummers of all time so that's bullshit and you know it.

Word, they're up there. Who did they influence though?

R.E.M is gold though, dad music or not, but Nightswimming is average, I don't get the love. Man On The Moon is their magna opus.

Battle of the Dads. I still think REM is more dad than DMB

Pop-Punk was started by Blink & Green Day imo, and no one really came close to those 2 aside some short stints by Offspring (talking their pop punk stuff), Sum 41 & friends. Rancid and early Offspring are definitely more punk.
