Freestyleskater182
I'm having a problem with my kick pedal and I am trying to figure out what is causing it because its super frustrating and I am wondering if anyone else has issues like this.Basically, in the last few months when I play, the kick pedal feels a lot harder to use than before.(a while back I did get new drum shells and my old pedal broke but I am using the same type of pedal as before)I used to be able to do the double strokes easier and play songs like anthem part 1 without TOO much problem. Now when I play I'm not bad by any means but something just doesn't feel right...it feels too heavy and my leg feels lazy.I have tried adjusting the spring tension and drum stool height but nothing seems to be working.I have a job where I have to stand up a lot and walk around a decent amount so I dont know if maybe my leg is just tired. Its just really frustrating because I dont know if its the spring tension, the drum head, my leg, the stool height or WHAT.Anyone else have this problem and any advice on how to troubleshoot?Whats weird is I switched to a dw 3000 that my friend has to see if it felt any better (its more expensive than my pedal)and it felt even harder to use.
decisions
I dunno, the pedal itself shouldn't matter TOO much. It might make the process easier, but, probably not be the deciding factor in being able to play well. I would say try and improve your technique before you go crazy trying to fix the pedal. For double strokes, I use the "slide" technique, YouTube that real quick and just start drilling it. Remember, it's ONE leg motion and TWO foot motions. I had this same problem recently and simply drilled the technique at different speeds until I got used to it. Now I can play songs like this with clean kicks: >https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6c0dEQh4i4 And if that doesn't work, maybe your bass drum head is on the verge of breaking and you're just not getting any rebound. Hope this helps in some way, let me know.
Julian Casablancas
I would start to try messing with the head tension. The tension I have on my Bass drum is just playable with the highest spring tension on my DW5000, I even use a Tama high tension spring on it. It was kind of a tightrope walk between the drum sounding perfect and being playable comfortably. I have a 24" kick and a 26" on the other set though and I have really low tension on it to avoid it from being too boomy. Anyway, I'm getting too much into detail I guess, but that's what I'd try first just to see if this causes the problem. Also, I found out that I can play way more comfortably when sitting higher on the stool, which is kinda weird because it's really high and my knees are not in an angle that most people find comfortably, but it does the trick for me. I think it's just a trial and error thing, maybe you find some positions or tensions more comfortable than others and it can be done really quickly.
Freestyleskater182
Thanks a bunch guys. The head tension is not something I have messed with much, so I will try that.I tried messing with the spring tension again and found that it actually does make CERTAIN things a bit easier.Just to clarify again, I do not think it was a lack of practice as it happened right when I switched to a new set.Im actually fairly good at double strokes.I appreciate the feedback. That was not what it was it had to do with spring tension. I have fixed the issue. Thanks though. When this happened I went from easily being able to play songs like dumpweed to getting super worn out and not hitting the bass drum notes in time... It wasnt a matter of lack of practice.
