The Abbreviators - midlife crisis

45 posts in this topic

So, us old fogies are giving it one last Hoorah. Last night we began the writing process for a new album and things are pretty exciting here in Casa de Speedo, just ask my wife.

We decided the best approach, since we haven't played together in 5 years is to treat the last album like a demo ... it was shit - as you will hear shortly - but we feel that a few of the songs are salvageable and, dare I say it, could even be enjoyable if given the right polish and care. We have gone through that 'album' chosen the 6 best songs that we could actually improve upon via rearrangements, rewritten lyrics, adding or subtracting parts, and just all around better musicianship. Add those to a long list of ideas and half songs - again, you'll hear some of those shortly - and just start everything from scratch and build it as a band and not just me, hanging out in my room, writing shitty songs by myself and making people learn them in a few hours before they get recorded.

I would also like to document this whole process via this thread; less so because I think people will actually give a shit but more so because I'm old and probably gonna die soon and would like to leave a little legacy for my kid, future kids, and future grandchildren to stumble upon through breaks in Facebook or internet porn. So, without further ado, here is what we are going to be working with ... well, some of it anyway ... I don't have every idea and song recorded but you'll get the idea of what things sound like and how the ideas will evolve and I will keep this updated as much as I can with pictures and videos of our drunken missteps and fumblings on the way to the finish line.

So, that is pretty much everything we are going to be working with more or less .... just wanted to share and, like I said, document this process. I hope you guys enjoy this and it's not a complete waste of time and solely for my own ego.

More to come soon ....

We made it exactly 7 minutes into the session before my string broke and I didn't have a replacement 'cause the same FUCKING string broke last time too.

Fuck you Ernie Ball!

So, let's get drunk and play video games. This has been a real productive sesh.

I used to adore 'American Love'. haven't heard half of these in forever, I think I lost my copy on Agent 12 when my mac blew up.

American Love became my 'First Date' ... we played the hell out of it and it was everyone's favorite and now it's probably my least favorite song ... So, much so that I had no interest in finishing the re-recording of it.

Lol, I hear that. its happened to a lot of my old originals, people would love one in particular, only wanna hear that one, so I grew to resent it. its weird how it works out.

I haven't listened to that one since we released the damn album 5 years ago.

I wish we would have done those songs better but oh well, it is what it is.

No talent, no budget, no time.

It's been about 3 weeks since our last practice, I fully expected to break strings and suck ass BUT it was actually fruitful. Plus, it was my first sober practice since I was, probably, 22. I've lost a lot of my speed and that blows ... I've also lost a lot of muscle memory and that blows harder ... however, we came up with some great ideas for songs that never really worked before and now they totally fucking work and that doesn't blow. That's done blowing. That's the money shot all over my face and hair.

It's about my ex, actually. Clarke doesn't get a song, Clarke's an idiot.

We started off this record as a very pop-centric, Ramones based influence. That has since given way to something a little more serious. I didn't set out to write a album full of serious songs but that's what has come out. Sure, I wrote the pop songs too but they just didn't feel right. There's a huge Against Me! influence to these songs and that feel appropriate as they were integral to my growing up and taking a different look at life. I haven't tried to emulate their sound and I don't think I could ... more soon taking a less direct approach to the music. Embracing more of a chaos than tight and fitted. Loose and driven it is then ... hell, maybe I should up the treble.
Oh, and I totally just got permission from LJG to cover Shit Stroll which is one of my all time favorites so, my day is made!
