  3. i don't hate feldmann at all. he is a super enthusiastic musician doing all he can to be successfull and a great songwriter The production style he uses is definately not my cup of tea but it's definately super modern and absolutely fitting for this generation of mainstream music... i don't get the huge outcry. feldmann is incredibly talented at what he does. i might not like whatever he does but that doesnt change the fact that he is an absolut mastermind in what he does. the only thing that this blink era changed for me is that i lost every respect for mark and travis. i mean. travis is one of the most creative punk drummers of this generation and he doesn't bother the way how plump he sounds on this record? to me it seems like they have completely given up on being a creative band trying to push their genre forward and rather just ride the (outdated) wave of washed up pop punk shite.... i started hating on mark with a passion... such a great songwriter that just got too lazy from all the fame and won't move a finger if he doesn't have to...... outsourcing songwriting makes sense when you have a pop act that will sell well because of other attributes ( i.e good looks, incredible voice, great skillset on the instrument, incredible entertainer ) but blink got big because of their personality and how they turned that into anthems for a whole generation. there's no reason to write songs for a band that can't play guitar or sing as well as you would...@ghent : how is this concept so hard to grasp?

  5. Also "Fuck paradise, let's put up a parking lot" makes way more sense because it lets the Joni Mitchell reference be a Joni Mitchell reference, instead of removing the irony from it and saying "fuck this place, let's put up a parking lot" and making it weird. They probably thought teens wouldn't get the reference.

  6. i don't think there's anything inherently wrong with using extra songwriters. it's just that i think mark/matt were strong songwriters in their own right and they were just lazy. it's easy to go to a max martin/john feldmann and ask him to write you a hit. the other problem with california and especially cali deluxe is that the vast majority of the songs aren't good at all. i'd say the first six songs on california -- cynical > built this pool -- are pretty worthwhile, because they really do set the stage for a big, nostalgic blink comeback album, and the songs aren't that bad. then it just devolves rapidly from there IMO, and cali deluxe is the worst of the worst. another issue is that if they want to corral feldmann in for a big blockbuster comeback record that's fine. but it's looking like they're about to do it again. and it's becoming glaringly obvious matt doesn't have any say in the band... he looks miserable onstage

  7. In Ghent's defense, I think he is just a fan of the music the same way people are fans of pop music generally. Nobody cares who the songwriter is when it comes to an Ariana Grande song or something, and in fact when word gets out that a pop artist was the only songwriter on a hit it's just seen as like a super impressive bonus. All that matters is that the song is good and that it's sung by the singer's familiar voice. For me personally, I put a lot more stock into the behind-the-scenes stuff because I think music can be more meaningful when it's straight from the source. It might be an overly romantic view haha but I think a band's music should be the outlet they use to push themselves out into the world, extend their emotions and frustrations and creativity and sense of humor and everything to listeners, and it should be a way for the band and the listeners to have a connection. When there's an outsider writing the songs for/with the band, it cheapens the final product a little bit. The more involvement we find out about, the more the music is cheapened and can end up, as a bunch of people have said, sounding like an imitation of themselves. I don't mind at all when a band works with a great producer because the goal should be to make the band's vision and art as clear and concise and pure as possible, everyone can use help and feedback to make music great. I just don't think California would've come across as a cheap reproduction of their old music with 2010s pop punk thrown in, if they were the true creative force behind the songs.

  8. Do you honestly think California is the best possible music that blink could create?

  9. I remember thinking this when DED came out. All three of them sounded so good in every song and you could tell they hit on something they missed with Neighborhoods. It was a solid showing of what they were becoming and could have been.

  10. I still dont understand how DED gets so easily forgetten about. That was such a great release. If you combine the good tracks from neighbourhoods with that, its easy to get excited about what wouldve happened next for this band.

  12. Cool to see that "I never found that special girl, who'd be there waiting at the airport terminal" was supposed to be the original line of the second verse.

  13. I love every song from DED. I don't get the hate. Would've been ecstatic if they kept going that direction. I think Neighborhood's needed a song like boxing day on the record, not the actual song, but an acoustic folksy thing could've broken up the sound of the record more and diversified the repetition I get around track 11 or so.

  14. Mark isn’t doing himself any favors putting the lyrics to Adams song and parking lot side by side. Shows how shitty their lyrics have become. Emena could be adolescent and still have very meaningful lyrics.

  15. I think Tom with the mental illness is still a better fit for the band than Matt. And honestly, I like Matt in Alkaline Trio - just don't think he fits that well in blink.

  16. Of course. Then there's another album to shite all over for 2+ years at the very least.

  17. Can the blink 182 section of these boards survive another California?

  18. At least it's a Blink album; can't say the same for California and Deluxe. I could deal with one of Skiba or Feldmann, but having both on the album and both having a big impact makes it sound too big of a departure from Blink. Boring guitar work and shitty production separates it from Blink.

  19. As a Feldman critic and a big one at that, I don't think he had nearly as much control of blink's album as he did over other bands he's produced. He's a co-writer sure, but I believe he suggested ideas more than anything else. I believe he didn't write a single lyric. But he definitely suggested ideas to Mark & Skiba. He's very forward with the first thought = best thought thing and I believe Mark's lyrics have suffered as a result. He does his best when he overthinks shit. He's not the songwriter he used to be when he could just shit out a great song in 10 minutes. That was over 15 years ago. What disappoints me more than anything is how underused Skiba was. It's obvious he wrote lyrics for the album. But I can't see that he even suggested any ideas for a new song. It's showing on this new album they're recording too. Skiba is barely there, whilst Mark and Feldman are there working together. All the evidence is pointing out that all he does is turn up to record guitar parts and told which parts to play. They may as well replace Skiba with Feldman. Feldman is more involved with blink than Skiba himself is. That's not a producer or a co-writer. That's a band member. Very misleading. Skiba is basically what that guitarist in Green Day was. What was his name? Jason? That's Skiba in blink-182. Only difference is Skiba will have some control over the lyrics/vocals, after all it is his voice they're using. All the evidence is there to show that.

  21. "The fact that he's so focused on writing the band's songs and that end of things, that's why he has me to basically produce the songs that he writes. So John will write a song with the band and they could be anywhere, or they could be on the beach or at Soho House, they could be on his back porch. Once they have the song structured out a little bit they'll record a 3 minute voice memo of it with the singer singing it and John playing acoustic guitar and I'll be in the studio and he'll send me that and he'll give me a direction and just say go and I'll just start building a track, and I usually have like 45 minutes to an hour before they come in to just get a basic track going of whatever the style is." Wow that's fascinating actually. I know Ghent and some others don't care because it resulted in music they like, but I'd be so interested in finding out what exactly was written by Feldy, and how many songs were originated by him or came from fragments he had in a songwriting database type thing. It's obvious from these videos that they operate as a machine as much as possible, it's really interesting and hard to argue with the success they've had doing it, obviously I still wish Blink wouldn't have felt the need to process themselves through their machine but what can ya do haha. Also LOL at Feldmann hyping up Zakk earlier in the video saying "I don't think I've ever seen anyone study or work so hard and be so dedicated to the craft! Well other than me when I was younger"

  22. If Mark quit and you would get Feldman or someone else on bass and vocals would you still consider it Blink and enjoy it? I guess I just don't get this type of thinking.

  24. You realize that "hardly doing anything" can have an impact in the void that is left, right? Outside of Bored to Death, there are hardly any memorable guitar riffs. And while it's not entirely his fault, his voice does not contrast with Mark's well like Tom's did. I'm just saying his presence from Tom is a downgrade.

  25. Wait what? Saying we’d get Neighborhoods is bullshit. Because mark, matt and travis wouldnt frankenstein an album in different cities with clashing ideas where one wants to go all synths and U2 guitars (and has little interest in making an album) and the other some indie band type stuff. Completely different scenerios

  26. Mark: Yeah, hi, Feldmann, we have about 30 songs ready to go. You going to produce for us right? Feldmann: LOL, throw those songs away. I'll write new songs for you. Mark: Perfect!

  27. I also have friends who are blink fans but do not follow them closely at all. They love California and think it is a top blink album. They never liked Neighborhoods Totally anecdotal, but it's my reality as well

  28. The only other massive Blink fan I know in real life told me the other day that California is his 2nd favorite Blink album of all time. He plays no instruments and could care less who produced what. I think we overestimate how many people care enough to know the credits of each song. Most people just hear the song and like whether it's catchy or fun. Even bands I consider some of my favorites, Nirvana/Muse/Tool/RATM,etc. I've never read the song credits now that I think about it... I think Feldy uses Blink for selfish reasons, but my only real complaints are lack of guitar riffs (which doesn't surprise me as it's not Matt's style) and the obvious overuse of whoas/nas. I think the "Matt had no input crowd" forgets that he said he first approached this as basically a ghost writing session until he felt more comfortable. So he probably had a ton of input, it just wasn't what you would expect as an Alkaline Trio fan. Him and Feldy were both trying their best to achieve what they think of as "Blink-182" which is fun catchy summer pop-punk, at a pivotal moment in the band's career. California is catchy as hell, my wife knows every word to every song and never even downloaded the album. Feldmann obviously had some input, but there's no way he was writing Trav's drums, Mark's bass, Matt's guitar, and all the lyrics. There's still a reason why I like Blink's new stuff and don't even like 1 song from these other pop-punk bands he produces.

  29. You are still dodging. Why don't you, as a Blink fan, want to hear what fucking Blink 182 can write, alone, without a writer for hire? Why do you want fake shit?

  30. It's a cover but good old Feldy can make the place go apeshit. Edit: I still don't want him in the band, I just thought this video was cool.

  31. At this point there is no point in arguing that Feldmann wrote a lot of California. It's not even debatable. It's fact.

  32. I wonder if he even recorded the guitars, it's been assumed for years that Tom didn't record guitars on multiple Neighborhoods songs so it's not like it's a sacred duty anymore. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Feldmann recorded some or all of them while they were piecing the songs together.

  33. Those handwritten lyrics are awesome to see! Also I actually like those original Parking Lot lyric ideas more than what they used in the real song haha the theme of "parking lots were fun to hang out in back in the day, life was so simple back then" comes through a lot more clearly when it's simpler like that. I wonder if he made a demo version at all. I still think it would work better in past tense though, just a nitpick if I was in Feldmann's producer chair hahah.

  41. I honestly don't understand how a blink fan can be ok with what happened to the band concerning feldmann and partially skiba. The first time Tom left Mark flat out said "we won't be continuing as blink182 because tom is 1/3 of that name", hence +44 was born. The 2nd time Tom left not only did Mark say 'hell yeah' to continuing as blink this time around, they hired a man to write songs for them. I would've been stoked for a 2nd +44 record, but instead we got a record that Feldmann wrote. We thought blink was over the first time and it was laid to rest. How is the 2nd time around different?

Never agree with anyone who is critical of something. Have virtually no answer for anyone who brings up valid points. pretty much standard faire for the bot

  47. Yes it does, don't lie. How can you honestly and objectively say you don't care that someone else was writing for and with blink on every song. Why do you like Blink 182 then? I'd say most like them because of the artists writing the songs.. It's not really fan fiction. Mark, Feldy, Travis, Matt have said themselves in multiple live interviews that John would often come up with a guitar part or chorus and they'd build off that. That's more than enough influence to be irritated by. If they were willing to admit that much, who knows if he did write full songs, very well may have. #fanNOTfiction

  48. So I guess you like the taste of diarrhea as long as you don't know what you're eating? You liked the new album until you discovered Feldmann helped write.

  49. I'm also a bit surprised by the Feldmann factory. I was expecting something a lot more extravagent. I guess it sounds like Garage Band because...it is garage band? Also fuck these kids, it's clear Feldmann writes all their music and they are just helpless without him. Props to Feldmann for doing what Tom could never do, sell and market his garbage product.

  50. Count me in! I like this idea. I think if we picked a record and everyone is allowed to give their feedback, it would be easier for more people to partecipate, without the rush/panic about a writing deadline. But I have no problem with the original idea either.
