I'm not the die hard blink fan I once was, I can take big breaks and don't need constant blink news and activity to satisfy me. I'd much rather have blink it in its real form for all it's flaws and Tom's shit than this new age watered down version where a lot of shit they are doing seems so forced.10 points

I remember it differently. It was quite a well praised album, just not on the level of the previous blink albums. I remember people saying blink played it too safe regarding that album. After a year of the release, people started disliking the album more. Talking about bridges, how they didn't record it as a band & how Tom had no input at all in some of the songs. But when you compare it to California or the new blink song, it definitely seems like a very progressive album. It's no classic for a lot of us. Just a lot of blink fans probably prefer it to new blink.3 points

My favorite part of Neighborhoods was that they just said "fuck it" to writing bridges.3 points

I dunno what you mean by I'm turning. I enjoy the song, but it's nothing amazing. I'm not a blind fan boy, there are plenty of post reunion songs I've been critical of, both with and without Tom, but I also do ultimately still enjoy this era of blink. California is far from their best album, but I still ultimately enjoy it through and through, and honestly enjoy blaring it on my car's stereo more than Neighborhoods overall. I dunno, I think it's silly that people are so steadfast in you have to hate or love this version of blink and therefore must feel the opposite for the era we just had with Tom post reunion. Can't you enjoy both eras for different reasons and be able to be critical of things they've done in both eras? Ah well, I suppose if we all just accepted that, this place would be a lot more boring.3 points

I'm spamming and I don't give a single fuck or shit, but I ended up back here because I was casually listening to shuffle and physically recoiled at the WOOs in Built This Pool. Fucking hate that song.3 points

I'm a bit torn on how I want blink. It was frustrating being a fan of blink from 2009 and onwards. No news at all sometimes. It'd be quiet as hell for almost a year or 2. No information regarding new albums or songs. That's how it was. Sure Neighborhoods was decent and DED was a step in the right direction. But blink are still way capable of more if Tom was committed. But it'd be like a new album every 7-10 years where Tom can actually commit. I could live with blink taking years to start work on an album as long as Tom would actually commit to it. Mark would form side projects in the process too. But I wouldn't want them doing the same shit as they were doing with empty promises and not really working as a band. I wouldn't want blink to be the way they were from 2009-2014. As for the Skiba era of blink, there is just the same amount of frustration. Just the frustrations are over completely different things. I'd rather have a producer that isn't as hands on as Feldman and just let Mark & Skiba write what is natural to them. Mark's natural songwriting sound is +44. It shows on everything he writes where he takes full control of where the song is going. It'd most likely be a blend of +44/Trio. But instead we've got a forced rehash of generic pop punk that blink were never part of even in the Enema/TOYPAJ days. They became just another generic pop punk band. Now they're getting help of songwriting teams. I don't want blink to be that way either. If the two options are blink from 2009-2014 and blink with producers and songwriting teams that are too hands on, then I'd rather blink break up and Mark & Travis reform +44 and Tom continue with AVA and his projects.2 points

I was was complaining about my perfectly good upbringing earlier and telling everyone I how punk I used to be, I put BITOMY straight after and it really resonated with me.2 points

Neighborhoods lyrics are a bit shit at times. Not cringe like California, just shit. This Is Home has the worst of it. GOOTDF has some iffy lyrics. Love is Dangerous has some shit lyrics. Snake Charmer is a bit iffy. Even If She Falls is iffy for me. The only songs where I like all the lyrics are Heart's All Gone, After Midnight, Fighting the Gravity, Kaleidoscope, Wishing Well and MH (apart from the helicopter line, but the rest of that song is fucking great lyrically IMO). Smiley face blows that whole album out of the water lyrically. Obvious, I Miss You, Stockholm Syndrome, Down, Go, Here's Your Letter, Easy Target are all great lyrically. The rest of the songs have great lyrics mixing in with some average lyrics, but nothing bad. Only Heart's All Gone might be the slightly better one out of every song on the smiley face album IMO. Just a shame they couldn't have the call and response vocals they do live, as well as a better bridge for that song.2 points

“The album itself was written in about a week in August of 2004. "I would pick up three bottles of wine and we'd head in my room to write," remembers Skiba. "I would basically go into my room and write a song," Steinbrick adds. "Then I'd bring it back to Matt's room and we'd lay it down. Matt would add lyrics to it and we'd refine the arrangements to perfect them." Matt Skiba: “We were living together in the same house when we wrote the record but, as you said, we were both touring a lot. I was gone more than I was home. We actually didn't spend a whole lot of time together, hence the time it took to make the record. Joe spent more time in the studio creating the music, and when I was home I would go in, but I ended up mostly writing from the road. When I was in LA, which was usually only for a couple of days, I'd go and put down some vocals. We built it over time, but it was because if our schedules that the record came out when it did.” Definitely feels like Matt had a lot more to do with this the album than just singing on it. I’m like 90% sure I read that the song ‘heather’ was Matt writing about Heather Gabel.2 points
-
He sounds better in that vid because he's singing an octave lower than how the song is on the album, which is a lot easier. If he tried to sing it at the right octave it would not have sounded good. But it totally works for an acoustic performance. I think Tom usually sounds good when he does acoustic stuff, and I always wished blink would have done more of it!2 points

I believe it was this. Skiba kept getting in drunk fights and made Laura mad because Heather left their merch guy to date Laura (who she eventually married). It became like a war between the bands and yeah, I think Skiba was fucking with their sound during performances. Sounded like a primadonna even though they were lightyears away from blink or Green Day's success. All sorts of threats. Anyways all's well that ends well because Skiba was invited to the wedding but couldn't make it because he got in a fist fight that night or the night before and got arrested. Read it a year ago. Maybe I'll dig it up and look it over to get the facts straight. I believe this is back when Matt was drinking.2 points

He sounds great here! Which is WHY it pisses me off so fucking much. He picks and chooses when to put effort into things. It's not that his voice just changed and I'm being a prick about it, it's that the dude takes the fans who made him a millionaire for granted and acts like a twat.2 points

I can get them started with a few talking points: "Matt isn't a bad as Tom was live" "The setlist is great, most people at the shows are casual fans and don't want deep cuts or new songs" "Of course you don't like this tour because Blink is touring with an African American" "40 year old's who aren't really fans anymore" "You are just a tombot" "Its way better than Rebel Girl" "But Feldmann saved this band" "Neighborhoods sucked though" "Of course the tickets aren't selling yet, the show is still 2 weeks away" "But its #16 on the alternative charts so......." "Blink is going in a new great direction. So organic and original" "Those are platinum tickets"2 points

Just listened to "Not Now" for the first time in ages. Absolute masterpiece.2 points

I’ve always liked neighbourhoods. Up all night Is still probably my most played song of all time based on how many times I listened to it when it released.1 point

I ripped into Neighborhoods when it came out because it has obvious flaws. Those flaws are still there. The only change is that California was a lot worse, so the goal posts had to move.1 point

Neighborhoods has its beauty to it. I wouldn't say it's better than Self Titled mainly because of how greatly that album was put together and perfected, but Neighborhoods is pretty much the first time since Dude Ranch they just wrote songs instead of a sound. It's a lot more raw and natural and the choppiness doesn't bother you so much at this point. They were definitely more distant around eachother, evolved a bit, and it makes for a unique album. It still kicks the shit out of California1 point

I couldn't stand either initially but I had an emotional past couple days, my wife blew me and swallowed for the first time, and I woke up to nightmares and hungover on pain pills. I got to work early at 4AM And put on rebel girl and was surprised to say I really enjoyed it. But that's the state I had to get to.1 point

they all suck at crime that's kind of the show. I love it personally, I like the humorous soccer mom does crime angle but I also like that the crime side of it isn't really "fun" crime, like it's dark enough in places whilst simultaneously being really funny.1 point
-
yeah im basically with you, I don't think self titled had amazing lyrics but it has a lot less blundering mistakes than Neighborhoods and other blink releases.1 point
-
Yeah if they did Give Me One Good Reason and most other blink songs without acoustic, Tom will sound shit like 70-80% of the time. He's still capable of the odd performance where he's good. He's decent here. Can tell he's actually trying there. I think he's decent here too. Especially on Always. Not perfect but it's listenable. Most times he's way worse though. Same with AVA. I find him even worse with AVA than blink when it comes to live performances.1 point

@Elisa @theedge00 finished ‘when they see us’ fucking hell, incredible tbh, so sad, genuinely teared up a few times for these boys especially Korey Wise, the actor who plays him is incredible, I haven’t felt a connection with an actor before like that. My heart was breaking for him. You guys have to finish it, yeah it’s tough and you’ll feel like putting your foot through your tv but it’s worth it in the end. 10/101 point

How the fuck, is Neighborhoods even close to Self-Titled?! Seriously! Not even in the same fucking realm!1 point

Same. Untitled’s lyrics have aged poorly for me. Neighborhoods is just tight all around. At age 29, it’s the blink album I listen to the most. @bossypants1 point

I genuinely like Rebel Girl, the main riff is sticky, the beginning of the chorus really lifts me up, the bass work is good, the bridge is fucking amazing with all those melody twists and breaks, I don't care about lyrics, Tom's music has always been melody-heavy, lyrics are pretty secondary. Not the best AVA song, but pretty close to top-10. BIOMY is a combination of things I despise or don't care about in music, from the easycore FYS-esque synth beginning, to boring two-chord verses, acoustics in the bridge are the most predictable thing you could do, Matt is shouting at me again, I hate it, I would prefer him singing in lower register, more post-punky, it really suits him and Heavens prove it. But the main thing is that disgusting chorus with ID gang shouting repetition, it's like in Believer where they repeat the title of the song at the end of the chorus in a really detestable way. I would never have thought that any part of a blink song would reminiscent ID. These bands were at opposite extremes of music for me and now they sound similar. And also I should mention lyrics. While Rebel Girl lyrics might be strange, I don't find it offensive, I just don't care. But here they are singing again about youth, parking lots, punks, up-bringing, in a really corny, commercial manner, as if they target a specific audience of nostalgia-driven people who would eat it up. That's what I call cringe.1 point

Everytime this thread gets bumped, I'm hoping it means Skiba finally got axed. *Sigh*1 point

Does anybody else think this single is forgettable? There hasn’t been really much promotion to go with it. blink just released a song while announcing a tour and then went back into hiding to resume recording sessions. Every once in a while I’ll forget and remind myself that blink released a new song not too long ago.1 point

Just to be clear, I'm not disagreeing with this, but it is funny how little he cares about the new trilogy and talks shit to be clear.1 point

The mods + admins should get together and make new forum sections. There should be some non blink 182 sections to discuss these things. Oh wait, there is1 point

I mean it's better than him being an elitist, just seems a bit petty when they all start pouting in the comments. By the way, veering a bit off topic, almond milk still up for debate.1 point

i agree that the ending of feeling this is prety epic, the way everything fades out and all u hear his the many vocals overlaping with the song finishing on one of the back vocal line , real good stuff1 point
-
a big part of the reason is because "blink-182" is a staple name that is extremly mass apeal and as a huge follow up they realy hit people hard back then with wmma all the small thing and adam song/staytogethe rfor the kids amongts many other big songs theyve had if a smaller band put out the same song it prob would barely get any traction1 point

That’s because it has no business being on a alt radio. It should be played in between Taylor Swift and Halsey1 point

It's weird, I keep hearing that new sum 41 song and even Rebel Girl on our national alt. radio but they never play BIOMY (yet they still play WMAA, I miss you etc.)1 point
