  1. Marks lower voice would sound so good along with Tom’s during that clip.

  2. Transgender Dysphoria Blues has renewed my love for the band, I love it as much as I love Reinventing Axl Rose and Eternal Cowboy

  3. The only true difference in 'sound' I get from Against Me! Is purely production value. The actual songwriting improved for their middle records but instrumentally and thematically I'd argue there's little difference. The biggest difference is from TransDys onwards because Lauras had a bit more open chord style songwriting, and running narrative style melodies more than structured patterns. I actually prefer her later work but there's still magic in the middle records. They've always done what they wanted to do but the punk fans decided it was selling out, even though that clearly isn't true. They've had so much flack for just doing well. It's fucking pathetic, frankly.

  5. I think a big part of what made Blink stand apart from all the other pop punk bands of the era was Travis. Most bands you could swap their drummers, including Scott, and never know the difference. Travis added a big layer to Blinks sound with EOTS that it just didn't have before.

  6. That sounds cool but he's gotta stop describing stuff as a journey.

  7. Black Me Out is perfect, including its production. Its rough and real and in your face, I adore everything about it.

  8. Sorry mate, we've hit max capacity on condescending old men, thanks for playing though.

  9. Doesn't sound necessarily exciting, just same old AVA... The issue with this band is that Tom’s voice isn’t that dynamic, kinda sounds the same in every song. Being the only vocalist in the band, that’s a problem. The same applies to his guitar work. It all sounds so similar, nothing interesting going on. Then, to cover that up, he uses spaceship special FX sounds. Which ironically seems the only thing he likes to experiment with.

  10. Trans Dys was my first Against me album. Loved it right away. Got right into everything else right after. Searching for is probably my favourite. The eternal cowboy is probably the only one I can’t Into as much although I do love some tracks on it. Also the acoustic ep is 10/10. Also the devouring mothers was 0/10.

  11. Tom says in the comments that this song is Box Car Racer 2.0. I don’t really hear that but I do like what I hear!

  12. I haven't listened to Agains Me! in forever since White Crosses. But that disucssion made me discover them again and that was a pretty great idea I think!

  13. Paralytic states into black me out could be close to my favourite album closer duo ever. So good.

  14. Agree to disagree, I feel the production was appropriate for the album as a whole. Its a statement piece of authenticity and rebirth, kind of makes sense for it to be rough around the ages. I like how it adds to certain songs like Drinking With The Jocks and Osama Bin Laden.

  15. Black Me Out could be one of the best song they've done in 10 years imo. When that chorus hits, damn.

  16. I think Pin The Grenade is an example of "overplaying" in my opinion. I actually really like the song, it's one of my favorites of the Skiba years, but the verses get a little bogged down with everything going on in Travis's beat. My guess is they started the idea based on a beat Travis had, which they said is a new approach they've been using the last few years. I give them props for stuff like that, but I think it's generally easier and more natural to write the guitar/bass/melody first and add drums to that, than to write drums first and then add guitar/bass/melody to the drums. Either way, it's a good song but it's fun to dissect stuff sometimes.

  18. Reinventing Axl and TDB are my 2 favorite releases. We Laugh at Danger is one of my all-time favorite songs.

  19. Yea, but blink would have never, ever became as huge or influential (for better or for worse) as they did without Travis. Every pop punk drummer wanted to be him, from the way they started setting up their drum sets to the parts they tried to play.

  20. The main issue with people is the control it takes out of the hands of the band members and into the record label (along with pressure from the label to make certain "artistic choices") which sometimes ends up affecting the sound. Against Me, for example, made a lot of stylistic changes when they moved to Sire Records to appeal to milder audience, and I think people hated the move towards commercialism more than the actual commercial success. If a band wants to give up control of their sound for money, it's still their sound and their choice to make. They may want to be able to afford a home and have kids or whatever. I would hope that people today are more open minded towards bands that go on to mainstream success though.

  21. New Wave? Edit: Nope. Searching for a Former Clarity, looked it up. I never really cared what label they were on. It's lyrically themed around that because that is what the huge outrage was about at the time. It's what they were living ... it's exactly my point from before and the reason I used them as an example. They were scene darlings until they started getting noticed and attracting major labels and then all of a sudden they suck and they're tourists and sell outs. It's a lame fucking argument from do-nothing wannabes and the people who preach it are mentally retarded.

  22. But it works with minimalist guitar and bass parts, gives the songs a lot of character and shape they otherwise would have never had

  23. I definitely see why people don't like it haha, but I'm a fan of him going overboard. I remember when I showed Kaleidoscope to one of my tutors at uni who is a drummer and he couldn't listen to the verses cause of Travis haha.

  32. Tbf, toms voice has changed more over the years than most people's and his output is divisive at best, the last thing id call it is samey, especially the last 6 years. He's capable of some absolute wank but uninteresting is a bit of a stretch.

  35. Eternal Cowboy is probably still my favorite of their records. I had that shit pre-ordered and sent to a book store to get it when it came out then walked 3 hours home listening to it the whole time. I didn't care for the Devouring Mothers much either outside of 2 or 3 songs. I never revisit it. Heart Burns, on the other hand, is a fantastic record that I always find myself coming back to a few times a year.

  37. Funny you pointed this song out. I’m not one to usually say Travis overplays, because I think it adds much needed flavor to blink given the bass and guitar work is so minimal. But this is one of the only songs that came mind on the topic and how it does seem a bit much on the verses

  38. I struggled to get into the early albums, loved half of the middle albums, and have loved most of everything since Trans Dys. but I love New Wave and White Crosses and stuff not sure why people have such beef about them, there's something fucking amazing stuff on those albums.

  41. Yeah sort of... That was kind of the charm of Enema-Self Titled blink though was the simpler bass and guitar and then Travis going crazy on drums in the background to contrast. Occasionally it can be too much when you just want it to chill. Neighborhoods - California definitely too much at times although I love DED instrumentals.

  43. this is bound up with rock and roll in the united states (initially) being and outsider art of the underclass and of people of color. you don't see it in genres outside of rock-oriented ones. and with punk-oriented genres, this is doubly compounded again; even more outsiders, more underclass (again, at the start). but not in pop or any other music genre; there is no discussion of frank sinatra or katy perry "selling out."

  44. I never understood why we act like money and art are mutually exclusive ... not that you're saying it or anything but your comment put this thought in my head. It's weird that we pretend making a good living somehow lessens musical integrity. You don't really see that mentality in any other form of entertainment. It's bizarre.

  45. I disagree. Tom was only the lead songwriter on untitled really. Everything up to that was pretty 50/50. Neighbourhoods is prob more Tom too but not hugely. You’re not giving mark enough credit as a song writer in blink-182. Mark is just as much the lead song writer as Tom was. Mark wants to play shows as blink-182. He wants to play those songs he recorded and wrote for blink-182 live. It’s definitely not all about the money. The money is a huge factor absolutely but it’s not the only one.

Other band included Sevendust. Possibly a new date to add : 12/20/1997 The band performs at the Stone Pony, Ashbury Park, NJ. Other bands included The Bouncing Souls, Shelter and Kid with Man Head. From the user pitkid01 My first blink show was 2 days later at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ! I believe Bouncing Souls and Shelter were the openers, with local opener, Kid with Man Head! I consider this my first real punk show. Anyone that doesn’t consider blink punk, did not see them in 1997! found very cool story from an attendee that was at this show : 7/6/1997: The band performs at Pier 30/32 in San Francisco, California as a part of Warped Tour 1997 TheOnlySilverUnicorn : I was there. At one point, a dude on the stage (maybe Mark?) pointed at the bridge and asked "Is that the Golden Gate Bridge?" Half the audience screamed "No!" A bunch of people screamed, "Bay Bridge". So, he looked at it and said, "Oh, it's the Gray Bridge?" I don't know whether he was trolling, trying to make a joke (that failed), or if he just honestly didn't know. found better flyer for this show : 4/12/1997: The band performs at Boreal Mountain Resort in Soda Springs, California, as a part of Snow Bored? Snowboard & Music Festival found ticket stub for this show : 12/13/1999: The band performs at Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix, Arizona as part of a radio show for KEDJ.
