  1. I think you guys are talking about different things when it comes to "legacy." In my opinion a legacy is a changing overarching thing that can be updated at any point. It doesn't necessarily have to do with how much you like or dislike any specific albums. In my opinion, Blink's legacy in 2005 was an amazing band of best friends who were the hilarious and meaningful soundtrack to my preteen/teenage life, who then took a huge artistic leap before tragically falling apart. The only negative feelings were imagining what could have been. Then they had a rocky but joyful (as a fan) reunion after a few years of being either insane or resentful, and released Neighborhoods and DED. I loved a lot of those songs and I'm forever grateful that I got to see them live two times, but they clearly weren't functioning quite right and their "legacy" at that point had to include the breakup, the personal awkwardness, and the sometimes-half-baked songs and artistic direction. That doesn't mean Enema was any less great, but it did take a little shine off of the band as a whole. They weren't this perfect entity or even a tragic "what could have been" story anymore. Once Tom was replaced by Skiba, the Blink legacy was in an interesting spot because there was very good reason to think that bringing in the singer/songwriter of Alkaline Trio meant that Blink was going to refocus on punk rock. That would've made the breakups/reunion era look like a bump in the road that caused them to go back to their roots. Instead, they took a different kind of left turn further into modern pop, which was made even more bizarre by the presence of Skiba. In my opinion, this just made their full "legacy" start looking like a funhouse mirror, you could see different things depending on the angle you were looking at it. Some people love the Skiba/modern pop influenced era, some people think it's a disgrace, some people think it's an entirely different band. That is the definition of a tainted legacy. There is no easy throughline or narrative to the band anymore, it's gotten so complicated and has had so many disappointments involving so many bandmembers that you can't just simply say "Blink is an amazing band of best friends who were the hilarious and meaningful soundtrack to my preteen/teenage life." That doesn't mean the love for the classic era music goes away, or that they are a bad band who needs to be shit on, it just makes the big picture (AKA legacy) more complex than it would have been without all the missteps.

  2. Say what you want about new Blink, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I just can't see an argument where California/Deluxe are in the same stratosphere, production-wise, as the Jerry Finn albums. Those albums sound so shallow and lack the depth/layers of a Jerry Finn album, where you can listen to songs 100 times and still notice new things.

  3. Imagine one of the most iconic bands in music losing out to that man child and his shower of cunts. Unreal. Absolutely fucking sickening this place at times

  4. fuck legacy. if blink released the literal worst album ever made in human history it wouldn't change their other great albums. people worry too much about legacy for no reason, it's pointless. this is the main argument I hear against Tom making a new Box Car record. "It would tarnish the legacy!" Who cares, it wouldn't ruin the first album. Not making anything new because it might hurt the legacy of something is dumb and I'd rather get new content even if it's not as good as what came before. That's why I'm happy we're still getting blink music without Tom DeLonge.

  6. we're still in the mindset that music taste is in any way objective? oh, god.

  7. bands that come to exist for decades are bound to have duds in their discography eventually, it would be weird if they didn't. at some point their creative efforts take a questionable turn and we're left with something like Summer in Paradise. The Beach Boys are a great example actually - they arguably have more shit albums than mind-blowing ones with 20+ albums in their discography, but lyrics like "don't know why we love to chase those tasty ladies / Betcha boys we'll be doing it in our eighties" don't ruin Pet Sounds or The Beach Boys Today!. it's only 2 albums for blink out of 8 total, and they had a good 5-album run from 95-03, which is more than a lot of bands can say for their own output.

  8. No it hasn't ruined my perspective of the music, although listening to DED does make me gutted we didn't get to see what would've happened if Tom had actually gotten his way with the idea of them writing in a house together again. It's not that the songs become worse, but there's like an asterix on the feelings you have listening to it. that's how it is for me. The music itself isn't ruined, but my perspective of my favourite band since is a kid is definitely tarnished and I think that's what the legacy argument is about. This is true, I loved some of neighborhoods but always had issues with parts of it, but in comparison to the clusterfuck their career went to, Neighborhoods has aged very well haha

  9. While I love arguing with Jan, I totally get where he's coming from. I'd say the legacy ruining thing is more that it colours your perspective of their earlier work because you know where and how they ended up. It's like finding out santa isn't real again. Christmas is still Christmas, but there's less magic. Also, loads of teenagers lie about what music they like to fit in. I also used to hide my love of blink because people made fun of them.

  10. Come on dude, it always works that way, the newest songs launch up to the top because streaming is more popular in general. Of course people aren't going to listen to I Miss You 1,000 a day anymore in 2021 but to pretend Pin The Grenade or Really Wish I Hated you is even remotely as popular or well received as I Miss You was (for ex.) is ridic. to me it doesn't "ruin their legacy" but when they end up having more shows and more songs/albums released in the washed up section of their career than their heyday or prime it starts to creep into that. To me Blink is SO different with Matt and post-self titled in general I don't really view it as the same band, Green Day however is the exact same lineup churning out the exact same 4/10 songs that are kinda making them stale and less dynamic than we thought.

  11. you can get close to objective discussions about music, but you have to define the parameters first; people like @Kay and @Ghent (two ends of the spectrum lol) disagree on what makes "good blink music", so it's unlikely they'll have a productive discussion the merits of their new music vs the old. that's why I think discussions on production are better; it's still largely subjective, but you can talk about something more tangible

  12. But that's just the thing, you're contradicting yourself with each answer. You say that you're not questioning if someone says they like Rancid och Taylor Swift because they fit the description of what you think is okay, but then you carry on to say that you're questioning someone for liking the California era blink-version because it don't fit your views of how blink should be. So I ask you again, why is it that you don’t think that everyone has the right to their own opinion?

  13. Because people live in denial and don't want to be negative. You're expectations are undoubtedly high and it's hard to see them crushed. Just look at the current era of star wars, you know how many people pretended to like that utter shit and then finally came out and said it's trash after the finale and years later from force awakens? People definitely don't have to have the same views as me, my views are usually different, but people who like current blink california era or recent star wars are in denial

  15. Yes Jan, sonically for the most part they are closer but you originally said this which is what everybody is saying you are wrong about. No blink fan finding this website in this day and age would find it weird people were discussing MCR, Descendents or Ramones because those bands are relative to blink.

  20. I agree with this too. For me it's not so much about the music when a band has a legacy. AC/DC are still huge despite releasing trash for 3 decades. People will always think of AC/DC as the band they were in the 70's. Blink will always be the band they were from 1992-2005 but the bitter break up, side projects, post reunion and Skiba era of blink just adds to all of that. Blink have an amazing story when you think about it. If they were as huge as Queen, then they'd have a movie that's even more dramatic and intense than the Bohemian Rhapsody movie. I've always wondered how they'd deal with the plane crash if there was a movie on that level.

  21. I don’t care about any of them. Voted NFG solely bc I wanna see that dog video

  22. Yes, there's something wrong with them. That's not much different than someone liking Father of all Mother Fuckers and disliking prime Green Day.

  23. So for example do you get the urge to listen to Enema and just as you’re about to put it on you remember they recorded California and suddenly you lose that urge? Or is it that Enema just isn’t that good of a record anymore in hindsight because they eventually recorded California? Both don’t really make sense to me. Enema and California are separate so the quality of one doesn’t change the other.

  24. Not even close. Toypaj isn’t 100% perfect but Enema, Boxcar and untitled pretty much are production wise.

  25. People who pretend that they love unnecessary sequels live in a bubble and don't want to admit that we've run out of material and peaked as a society.

  27. I mean, that's debatable. If Pulp Fiction had a sequel it wouldn't stand out as much. If another director made a sequel to it you'd think it's pointless, milking it, less of that artist. If Tarantino made a Pulp Fiction it would high and likely be worse, and you'd think slightly less of the artist. Sometimes things are left better untouched. However, I don't think Boxcar would be forced in anyway, so I'm all for it, even though the sound would be different.

  29. And yet you only found out about Lagwagon a week ago but knew of MCR and Ramones well before. Also as @twentytwentysaid MCR also toured with blink and were pop radio big at around the same times and blink have said the ATST nana’s were a homage to the Ramones. They are both plenty relative to blink fans just as Lagwagon is.

  30. If a blink fan feels like joining and sees that Descendents is winning, they'll know they're in the right place. There is only one band that should win this and it's them.

  31. A few polls are close this round. If anything ends in a tie, I'll leave the poll open for an additional 24 hours. If it's still tied after that, my dog will decide. Two identical treats, equally far away from the dog. Each treat will be on top of a piece of paper with one of the band names on it.

  32. was kinda tough on this one. MCR are obviously the more interesting group, with a more creative approach and discography across the board. still, some of their stuff always could seem generic (i don’t love you/SING/only hope for me is you etc) and they simply haven’t aged well to me. like their biggest influence, queen, the overemphasis on theatrics can grow tiring with time descendents are the winner for me. even if their sound didn’t evolve, recent efforts illustrate a path forward for a genre so stuck in the past by focusing on the present. i find it downright subversive there are songs about old age/dieting/illness on their most recent LP, combined with their penchant for humor that was so influential. and no question, milo/IDWGU are huge records.

  33. NOFX are overrated in my book. classic sure, but NFG have made more memorable additions to the pop punk canon, and have a handful of good to great LPs to boot

  34. I've always thought there was a bit of Queen influences on some MCR songs. Welcome to the Black Parade's intro is the best example. Queen to MCR is basically what the Cure is to blink. You can definitely hear the influences.

  40. Favourite band of all time but rarely listen anymore. I've spun the old stuff to absolute death and the new stuff just doesn't have any real replay value for me. I honestly can't even remember half the songs off Nine (even though I thought it was a step in the right direction when I first listened to it)

  41. Yeah, this is exactly how I feel. And they're still my favourite band for life, but I don't need to listen to them constantly, their music basically lives with me anyway.

  44. That's not an opinion though, that's like a troll or someone being extra hip if they legitimately like current blink better than past. Even the Cali bots don't like it better than its predecessor Enema/TOYPAJ
