Rusty Shackelford Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I think it's okay for Tom to think so highly of himself because he's more willing to try new things. I miss riffy Tom but he still has it in him. I like that he plays a little more complicated things yet still has his style. It still fits unlike new Green Day where some of the playing is out of place. It's good but it feels like they're trying to say "Hey everyone we really can play our instruments, not just powerchords" except noones listening where Blink gets much more respect these days because they're still just a bunch of normal guys. We'll see more from Tom's playing Quote
Willem Posted January 5 Posted January 5 It's funny to read this now after Tom got back and created some good riffs on ONE MORE TIME. Quote
Locean Breeze - Jan Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Tom still writes a good riff, and wayyy more interesting on guitar than Matt/Feldy/Mark playing it for blink, but they definitely feel "yo put in a Tom riff here!" instead of more naturally from time to time (including AvA in this). I'll take it..but some of it feels forced imo. Namely DWM intro, handful of stuff on Lifeforms. Favorite guitar from OMT off the head: -Anthem 3 all of it (literally gave some slight Dude Ranch vibes - just sounds great in every way) -More Than You Know main riff. Seriously, one of the most unexpectedly cool 'riffs' in a while. Just rips. -Terrified Boxcar-esque riff. It's from Tom's creative peak (imo). -Turpentine. Not much a riff, but the guitar is just noteworthy. -One More Time - just kidding. Sounds kinda like a highschooler playing guitar. Still cool/haunting though. -No Fun main riff. Sound a bit like something off Toypaj or a throwback blink feel tucked away in there somewhere. -Everyone Everywhere. Little bit boxcar-esque as well. -If You Never Left. Not my favorite song like others, but nice to hear Tom going off on guitar here throughout. -ONE NIGHT STAND. GOAT SONG GOAT GUITAR WORK IDC His guitar works is really good on OMT though..every blink album really. I actually had a moment again going back and picking through the guitar. Even though I hate the drum production, Travis is definitely a bit of a musical genius with the way he helped structure this all together (better than Feldy..his senior). Album is good. Quote
Locean Breeze - Jan Posted January 6 Posted January 6 It is actually not outlandish to say Tom is the best guitarist in mainstream music currently lol. He was just really cool back in the day, but was in comparison to a lot of magnificent guitarists of the 90s/2000s. He stands out like crazy now for simply tossing in a riff on a radio-friendly song. 2 1 Quote

Nick or Tim from 311. You’re just going to use your bias to trump anything I say though so I’m not really going to bother any further Quote

thongrider Posted January 10 Posted January 10 And Mark is the best bassist! A shame about Travis and his drumming though. 1 1 Quote

I agree with this pretty well. Not only do crowds sing the words, but they often hum and na-na to the melodies of Tom's riffs a fuck ton. 1 1 Quote
