Bring me the Horizon

Are you still 15?

I don't really care for lyrics but find it hilarious that a group of blink fans are slagging off another bands lyrics.

Blink are one of the biggest sell out bands I can think of and their lyrics especially on enema and toypaj for guys in their mid 20s are cringe beyond belief.

You got any examples please?

First Date lyrics are pretty awful, who goes on a first date in their mid to late twenties?

The Rock Show - "everytime her parents go out of town" - erm Mark aren't you close to 30?

Happy Holidays you Bastard - stupid and barely make sense.

Give me One Good Reason - singing lyrics about jocks and preppies, mom and dad not understanding and ditching school.

I feel like I'm dissing Blink when they're my favourite band but to say they are amazing lyricists is pretty stupid.

There are too many I can't be bothered.

Pipe down then eh?

First Date and The Rock Show, the story behind those says it all really. This was written by Mark for the TOYPAJ vinyl reissue:

we recorded the demos for take off your pants and jacket in the same small practice studio where we wrote enema of the state. after a couple of weeks we had  amassed about a dozen songs. we were proud of our work. the songs were different from anything we’d written before. the tracks were catchy, but with a definitive edge. we invited our manager to the studio. he was the first person outside of the band to hear the new songs and we were excited to show them off. in the control room, he listened quietly to the tracks one by one. at the end, we turned to him with an “am i right or what?†expectation, to which he said “i think it’s really cool, but i don’t hear that THING. that blink-182 good-time summer anthem thing…†WHAT?! are you fucking kidding me?! summertime anthem good time whatever the fuck you just said? tom and i were furious. how could someone demean our masterpiece?! do you not GET it? you want a fucking single? i’ll write you the cheesiest, catchiest, throwaway fucking summertime single you’ve ever heard. i drove home, grabbed my guitar, sat on the floor, and wrote “the rock show†in ten minutes. tom drove home, grabbed his guitar, and wrote “first date.†these became the first two singles off of the album—widely successful tracks, and live favorites to this day.

Happy Holidays is a "joke" song, so naturally the lyrics are gonna be absurd.

Give Me One Good Reason - I can see where you're coming from there. Although a lot of the references in the lyrics are to "they" not "we" which makes it a bit more reasonable imo. For example:

i like the ones who say they listen to the punk rock

i like the the kids who fight against how they were brought up
They hate the trends and think it's fucked to care,
it's cool when they piss people off with what they wear, oh yeah

Seems he's just talking about the youth of the day.

Man, as someone who looks for lyrics in songs, and sort of clings to that aspect of music (Hell, my hero is Oberst...) I find nothing wrong with Blink's lyrics. I think for the most part, they do a really great job.

We've all seen the bridge,

a broken seam and a girl on one side

you think your words will work

but they only work when you lay down and close your eyes

I thought of all the lines,

all the right ones used at all the wrong times

but that's alright, depression's just a sarcastic state of mind.

I think of all the things I'd say to you if I had the chance again

I think of all the things I'd scream

but I think it's for the best that you and I just don't connect and

things are never quite what they seem

will there ever be a girl to give her heart to me

or will I be too blind to see it?
I wouldn't make a sound

I'd keep it underground

It always seems like I'm running, running, running, running 'round

One more time you will laugh about it and he'll never try to give you more

and I don't care, he is such a dick... treats you like you are a stupid whore

and it seems like things will never change

you go on, every cloud is in your way

and I know you feel empty all the time

you never listen to anything I say

All of Apple Shampoo...

The three date theory's getting old

everyone's getting left out in the cold

I wish it didn't have to be so bad

So, i'll see you with another guy

who pretends not to hear you when you cry,

oh yeah, I wish it didn't have to be so bad

Don't depend on me to ever follow through

on anything, but I'd go through hell for you

and I haven't been this scared in a long time

and I'm so unprepared, but here's your valentine

a bouquet of clumsy words, a simple melody

this world's an ugly place, but you're so beautiful to me.

More time apart will you give you

a few more months to argue

is this too much to live through

it always seemed too far to drive the point home

send more letters...

pray tomorrow

ends up better

I know their catalogue is huge, but these are just the first songs that randomly popped in my mind and I just started typing out parts quickly... I think they're consistently great with their writing. Even songs like touchdown boy in my opinion

I saw my friend out on the field today
I asked him where he's going, he said "All the way"

now one by one as they walk right through the door

they just keep coming back, I guess they want more

he has fun, fun, fun and you might call him a whore

but just look where he's at cause he is the one that scores

For Pop Punk guys, they killed it.

And when they changed their sound up...

I'm so lost, I'm barely here

I wish I could explain myself, but words escape me

you're too late to save me

You're too late... You're too late

You're cold with disappointment

while I'm drowning in the next room

the last contagious victim of this plague between us

I'm sick with apprehension

I'm crippled from exhaustion

and I dread the moment when you finally come to kill me

always found this beautiful -

I'm talking to the ceiling

my life just lost all meaning

do one thing for me tonight

I'm dying in this silence

the last star left in heaven

is falling down to earth and

do you still feel the same way?
Do you still feel the same way?

Not trying to argue, just had fun reflecting on blink lyrics.

old blink lyrics were quite solid and that's when they weren't trying to be and thats the difference. BMTH are trying to be sincere and it ends up awkward and cheesy as balls. but I'm not bagging on them, a lot of bands in similar genres are the same.
