We learned nothing about Snoke but Im OK with how they handled him. I still want to know who he is but im not upset about it.

Yes Kylo may have lied. But I dont like the idea of everyone in the universe being related. Ive been praying that Rey isnt a major characters kid!

Except she already knew, or at least had assumed that much? I took it more as a shared acceptance than a potential lie, but that's just me.

All the try hard super cool people saying it’s shit while Star Wars fans liking it?

I'm not a star wars fan really, and I really liked it.

In my experience, mostly, or just people who typically dismiss things other people are really interested in regardless of whether they're a fan. Purists and contrarians tend to be the worst with franchises like this. Almost every big fan I know gave it around an 8 or 9/10.

So full thoughts on the movie as a whole:

It resembled Empire and ROTJ in many good ways, but went its own direction and didn't fall back on the typical Star Wars tropes that can get tired. There was nothing that happened that didn't fit in with the narrative, it wasn't just random crazy action that eventually means nothing or is only there to fill time. Everything had a purpose, even if the execution seemed weird. Long movie, but worth it.

One thing I forgot in my initial post: it's hilarious that the helmet was something Snoke made fun of. I didn't think it was necessarily a broadly encouraged idea, but the fact that the individual giving him orders thinks it's a stupid, shitty costume... Wow. I bet Snoke is the subject of his own spin off movie.

I think it's the opposite. Seems like TLJ is the hip SW to like. There are think pieces being written about it and it is getting pretty much universal praise from critics.

It caused a revolt among fanboys, but it is quickly settling down. I'd say the initial reaction was ~80% negative on the SW message board I read.

Weird. The 8 or 9 people I know who love SW fucking loved this movie. A purist or two would probably spoil the batch.

I think the initial fanboy revolt was due to the movie destroying (at least temporarily) all of the fan theories that we spent 2 years brewing up.

Rian Johnson basically took all of the fan theories and said fuck off and die.

Eh, I mean personally I'd like to be proven wrong. Surely it's better that they were surprised, rather than just automatically knowing the 'secrets'? just my attitude but I *loved* the Rey's parents reveal, I thought it was perfect and not what I thought of at all.

I’m really happy with the film, I’m just a bit worried about where the story goes from here. They blew up all the fan theories, but it could all be part of a plan for something extra satisfying in 9. I may have already said this, but the success of this movie will depend on 9 to me.

I think I agree with this.

Empire Strikes Back is my favorite movie, but without Return of the Jedi it is incomplete. I feel the same will be true about this one.

I interpreted it the same way as you and that's the best outcome. But you never know with these fan theories and JJ Abrams

Also all these things set up Episode 9 really good since its a clean slate. For some reason I keep thinking of the Breaking Bad season 4 finale as a comparison

Heh, well the prequels weren't bad because they weren't like Star Wars, they didn't work as films because of the acting, writing, pacing, plot, direction, ...logic.

The only positive I can think in those movies is that they do retain some Star Wars-y traits. It just wasn't executed well. They still felt like space operas.

And then in episode 9, when they give fans all the things they've been clamoring for..people will complain that they caved to fan theories and abandoned their creativity or something.

it's all rather predictable.

as i saw on twitter the other day: "I’m so old I remember when fans were people who liked things."

And then there are adults who like Star Wars because they think their fandom defines them and who they are, to the point that any critique is nit picking and will gladly release the contents of their wallets for any slice of nostalgia or brand allegiance. These people are largely sheep.

These new films are certainly more satisfying to me and I would assume most people, but they have very little wonder or excitement that the originals did. The OG ones are remarkable films that blend genres in a compelling way while retaining a cohesiveness in world building and style. Nothing is perfect, but I think they warrant their admiration and ultimately stand the test of time. So it's hard to exactly compare these new films. Not only do they have to be authentic enough to be Star Wars in spirit, but also compete with some of the greatest movies we have. But in some ways that's why I prefer Rogue One over TFA, it felt like something partially new was happening. It felt low stakes in terms of what it wanted to accomplish and did that very well. It still heavily relied on knowing the Star Wars universe, but I felt it added too. I found it more interesting despite knowing ultimately how it ended. I was for the most part pleasantly surprised and felt like it was a story worth telling. TFA was a relief that it wasn't a complete fuck up, but felt hollow with it's slight manipulation of status quo. It's at odds with itself. It wants to progress and be modern, but it also plays it safe and regurgitates the first film to a great extent. It basically is what it is.

I quite enjoyed Rogue One, it felt like it took place in the Star Wars universe, TLJ just doesn't feel like that to me.  Kinda feels more like it's just a different sci-fi universe like the 5th element's or something.  Just felt off.

I get that.

To me, the scenery was important. The only real terrain we encounter for a period of time that isn't aboard space craft is bizarrely similar to earth. The casino, race track, etc. Obviously some components were different, but it felt like a place I could go to. We have the desert area for the final face-off, and briefly for Rey's time with Luke, but that was not the full experience.

In other films, Rogue One included, you go to so many familiar places. Deserts with cascading hills, strange, futuristic-yet-old shacks and bars and village streets, you encounter so many weird creatures and sometimes new people.. You just get used to it and the whole experience becomes eponymous with Star Wars.
