Hello people, recently I started working on the task of replicating Tom's guitar, and I found this forum which was undoubtedly the greatest help to find each sticker as well as to replicate them (Many I did not find or were in very poor quality, so I design it myself again) That is why, thanking for your help I attached all the vectorized stickers in PDF and .crl (CorelDraw)  for anyone to use (I am not selfish as one of the group here). I relied heavily on the stickers of the Russian seller and in many ones I could not exactly replicate the logo. Anyways little details, I hope that helps. Keep rocking!

So, I was definitely a bit late to this forum but this was always a project I wanted to take on.

i recently acquired a Squier hot rails strat that has an X2N installed in the bridge.

I do need to get a pickgaurd with an angled Humbucker bridge cut, replace the middle and neck pickups, add white knobs/switch tip and replace the bridge saddles. I also plan on putting some extra springs in to hold down the bridge, as well as replace/upgrade the tuners.

of course the headstock isn’t the correct size, but I prefer the big CBS style headstock so it’s not a huge deal.

I may also throw a stock fender single coil in the middle at some point and work on some CC tones.

when I have time, I want to go through all the information here (which you were all so kind to share and I very much appreciate) and start working on the stickers in illustrator.

im not expert, but I use it to layout band merch so I figure if I spend enough time working on this project I can get close.

thanks again for all the hard work and information you’ve all provided. I’ll be sharing some dude ranch tone videos soon!

Thanks!

i do a ton of work on guitars, but I’m excited to hopefully improve my skills in illustrator and learn some new things as well that could help me when making things for my band/clients in the future! Kind of like a fun homework project.

If you get a chance, a lot of other info about this guitar can be found in a few other threads on this board (such as Sticker Strat ‘94)

If there’s anything at all you need from us, we’ll be here!

So I've decided to create an updated photo timeline of the Sticker Strat with fresh photo links since almost all of them have died out. Using a similar format, I'll note the many changes along the way. Photos are a combo of my own findings plus a few from others kind enough to share their own images with us. Dates are included as I know them.

1994:

SOMA, october 7th 1994: neck and bridge pickups replaced with seymour duncan hot rails and jb jr. respectively

stock-middle.jpg

1995:

Cheshire cat release party, february 24th 1995: JB jr. is now in the middle position, bridge pickup is now a white dimarzio x2n; dunlop straplocks are added; stickering begins

IMG-2558-1.jpg

Berkeley square, august 4th 1995: clover has been added to the headstock:

guitar-berkeley-square-95-2.jpg

goodtimes tour, fall 1995; more stickers added: "big brother," more airwalks, "short lived tour of duty '92," and the "i don't wanna grow up" that was snipped off the album cover sticker between the pickups. rhythm collision has been added:

guitar-front-95.jpg

note the operation ivy sticker extends past the jackplate on the side:

guitar-side-95.jpg

fall/winter 1995: strung out, the vandals, and the queers added. dunlop straplocks have been replaced with schallers.

engine room, 10/27/1995:

engine-room-95-zoom.jpg

note the 7 seconds sticker on tom's shirt would later be added to back of the guitar that same show:

7-sec-shirt.jpg

australia, december 1st 1995:

aussie-95-crop.jpg

1996:

soma, january 27th 1996:

soma-1-27-96.jpg

summer 96: sack lunch has been added, ten foot pole sticker ripped, marker stripes on upper horn begin to fade:

warped tour, new jersey, august 2nd 1996:

guitar-front-96-sack-lunch-zoom.jpg

its then removed at the end of warped tour 96; pennywise is added

pennywise-zoom.jpg

note how the sack lunch sticker took out a chunk of the vandals sticker and dinged the nofx sticker

fall 96: tom replaces his lightning bolt strap with a grey marble strap. saddles are upgraded to graph tech string savers:

el mocambo, toronto, september 21st 1996:

marble-strap-96.jpg

private party, 1996; arnette stickers are added. note the duct tape on the strap

party-96.jpg

whiskey, october 8th 1996:

whiskey-96.jpg

1997:

get travel, south lake tahoe, january 3rd 1997:

get-travel-97.jpg

get-travel-97-2.jpg

bear mountain, march 1997; third arnette sticker added to the back of the headstock:

arnette-headstock-1-crop.jpg

dammit video shoot, june 1997; marble strap is replaced with a black ernie ball polypro strap; arnette and airwalk stickers are covered with tape for advertising reasons:

dammit-front.jpg

warped tour, san diego, july 2nd 1997:

warped-7-2-1997.jpg

warped tour, new jersey july 26th 1997; lagwagon sticker has been added:

warped-1997-front.jpg

great closeup of the x2n and the bridge. note tom has the offset graph tech saddles (american made fenders come stock with offsets)

ten-foot-pole-zoom-97.jpg

also note that the pickguard is custom cut for the x2n, thus placing it closer to the bridge

warped tour new jersey july 26th 1997:

stone-pony-97-crop.jpg

warped tour new jersey july 26th 1997; note the blue 7 seconds sticker from 1995:

back-97-main.jpg

reading festival (UK), warped stage, august 22nd 1997:

guitar-front-august-97.jpg

The guitar remains like this during the race around uranus tour until...

Late fall 1997: all stickers are removed. tom adds electrical tape shapes to the destickered body, but adds court jones bunny stickers (same ones as his billabong les paul) between the pickups and next to the bridge.

club Dunois, Paris, France, November 6th 1997:

destickered-97-crop.jpg

UC irvine, november 26th 1997:

508632-EC-1-ADE-4413-A91-C-1-C8-A8-C3-FC

destickered-irvine-97.jpg

This is the last known performance with this guitar, at this point it is retired in favor of the gibson les Paul’s.

2014:

the guitar remains in tom's possession and lives in the ava/to the stars headquarters. the white dimarzio is replaced with a black Seymour Duncan invader. The JB Jr. in the middle is also replaced with a Seymour Duncan Lil’ Screamin’ Demon.

tom's instagram, july 29 2014:

destickered-2014.png

2021:

photos of the guitar in it’s current condition surface online. You can see Tom placed tiny snippets of stickers between the Hot Rails and the neck, as well as the Invader and bridge. All taken by tom's manager Jeff:

full-body-2021.jpg1-BCA90-EF-5-FB8-4-E57-BA76-3-FABE142-A6

Look how dodgy the cut for the angled humbucker is!

The headstock/neck, showing the serial number. N3-91934.

neck-2021.jpg

Doing a serial lookup, Tom's guitar left the factory in late 1993/early 1994. Which confirms the model is a 40th anniversary edition Fender Strat!

It would be a great idea to do a timeline of any video footage we have of Tom playing that guitar as well (like tour footage, live TV performances etc) !

Great job @Q182, you're a legend for doing this huge work and effort, much appreciated!

@Q182 great timeline dude! i thought i'd add higher quality pics of my own sticker strat so people can get a sense of the positioning, which i prototyped like five or six times to get a close as possible. the scale of my stickers is very close to accurate, probably ~5% variance or less.

Thanks man! I felt a new one was due ever since that soma '94 video surfaced and damn near all of the images in this thread are dead links.

I jam out to every band represented here, except for Short Lived. I can't find any of their music online. I know they played with Rhythm Collision a few times back in the day

If you get a chance, a lot of other info about this guitar can be found in a few other threads on this board (such as Sticker Strat ‘94)

If there’s anything at all you need from us, we’ll be here!

Thanks so Much!

at this time, I’m focusing on getting a few more pieces. Mainly the correct pickguard.

ive ordered from warmoth in the past but they’re super backed up right now. If anyone knows where I can purchase the correct pickgaurd (already cut) please let me know!

Honestly the best way to do it is to take a standard strat pickguard and DIY it, or have a luthier do it for you. Tom’s p/g was custom cut, plus then you won’t have to cut off the milo goes to college sticker between the pickups so much when you get to the stickering process.

Is there a particular version of the guitar you’re going to make (Dammit video, warped ‘97, etc.)?

Oh word. Good call. I can probably just cut one DIY.

im thinking about going for the dammit version because that was the first song I ever learned on guitar and also, Tom having the big lagwagon sticker with the bright green/yellow was the reason I found lagwagon and got into more cool bands.

i kind of think it’s rad that everyone has their own personal reasons and connections for which era they’re going for. It’s definitely a passion project.

Very cool! The Dammit version was always my favorite since that’s where I first saw the guitar. And convinced me to sticker up a few of my own axes

I’m willing to admit that this guitar is 100% responsible for my taste in music. Without checking out the bands on it, I wouldn’t know about the smaller obscure SoCal bands (Rhythm Collision), hardcore (Gorilla Biscuits), and the Fat/Epitaph bands. For me it opened the doors to a lot of great music.

1.) "dammit" is version one (no lagwagon)

2.) late warped 97 is version two (with lagwagon)

so which are you leaning towards? i initially did version 2, but because i saw him for like over two years with live with that axe, and only added laggy at the very end of its tenure, i ended up removing it.

I did version two but mine has some differences based on preference. For example, you can completely see the "I Don't Want To Grow Up" sticker on mine because well I love the Descendents and think it looks badass that way. I've managed to do a replica but put a slight twist on it to make it mine. I had a Vans sticker on the back too but it wore off, so the back looks like Tom's now with DESCENDENTS, 7Seconds and Guttermouth.

I miss my sticker strat. It's currently getting Graphtech string saver black saddles installed and a setup and neck adjustment. I'm playing my 2001 graffiti yellow TD Fender signature until it's finished, and I must say I don't like the neck much on that guitar, especially when playing scales, leads and arpeggios. I never minded it until I built the sticker strat. I've come to prefer the neck on my sticker strat, which is a 2014 Fender Standard (MIM) HSS Strat.
