I'm sorry I was upset for missing out on merch and disliked the assumption that I should be camped out online every single day on the off chance that they'd drop something. I'm clearly a complete asshole.

that's super typical though. online-only, super limited stuff that sells out in minutes has been a thing for like, what, over ten years now.

i stayed up all night to click "buy" on disney's raiders of the lost ark 40th golden idol at 7am PDT the very saturday of jacket's anniversary. it was only announced on socials days before. i got one. they were sold out in less than 20 min.

Typical or not, people are allowed to disagree with the approach and feel annoyed.

every single person calls people out for being dicks. assholes just get banned. i've talked about this before, but many of the users are kids as young as 12 or 13. and this generation is super woke, so watch out edgelords. reddit-style trolling and flaming is just not tolerated.

So,hypothetically, If we rammed a wooden stake up its heart...?

I'll rejoin the disc when I get more home office time. I love that Mark does that.

I was just put off by the format I think. It gave us the Mark Zoom, therefore - it's worth its weight in gold. Davey, can you vouch for me again - I'm a cool guy. I'm trying to remember how I started getting involved here...

You just randomly start commenting in the hope that someone takes notice

no, it's just your complaint is a broader one about late capitalism and has nothing to do with blink.

cute.

in all seriousness, i was referring to the concept of artificial scarcity as it relates to the attention economy. scarcity has always been what makes capitalism work, especially when it's manufactured scarcity (which is, in fact, anti-market). the attention economy means that the owners of society are very focused on socials and their numbers... the likes, the subscribes...

limited edition merchandise has existed probably since fan-based product has existed (think of all the pieces of the "true cross" sold on the pilgrimage trail). so what you have now is people who want to drive followings on their twitters or tiktoks or instagrams or facebooks or youtubes or whatever. so they only announce their limited edition wares there, and the people that follow the socials get rewarded.

so when @Kay complains that she has to be "camped out online every single day" to not miss out on limited edition blink merch, what she's really saying is i don't want to pay attention to the attention economy. which i fully respect, it's a principled choice. and the result (or consequence) of that choice is that you don't get the rewards it offers then.

broadly, this is about

a.) i want to live in a world in which my choices carry no consequences

and / or

b.) i am an obstinate person who derives security, identity—and possibly even pleasure—from grievance.

both positions of which i relate to and actually empathize with.

@Patient #48273does that about cover it?

thank you for listening to my TED talk

Cute.

In all seriousness we both know that scarcity is just a marketing tool and blink having always had a  shit merch store won't be solved by getting rid of batista. Dont drag me into a kay vs davey fight. I love you both. Maybe less than speedo, but still.
