Literally takes the tone and life out of them smh. Travis’s drumming and drum sounds on TOYPAJ and Boxcar Racer will forever be GOATed. sometimes i wonder if travis is just not hearing things like most people hear them. he already has stated he doesn't use an in-ear in one ear whenever he plays live, which has got to have consumed some of his hearing in that ear. perhaps the ringing natural tones of a drum kit are not pleasing to him at this point, which is truly unfortunate. OMT is so great overall, it's just a shame the production doesn't meet the songwriting. jerry finn worked really hard to make the classic records sound great drum-wise, and it's obvious from trav frequently talking about how annoying it was that finn took forever to mic the drums up that he fundamentally disrespects some of the art of recording. i understand that it's easier and more efficient creatively, the way they're currently working, but it undermines the final product in an audible way 3 Quote

The last year I’ve noticed frequent ringing in my ears when it’s silent….so there is no way his hearing isn’t fucked lol. I got the same sense too that he was annoyed by Jerry’s methods and Travis definitely takes short cuts..which you can tell when comparing his production to that of Jerry’s. This is why I wish they’d just do at least one album with a real rock producer like Bitch Vig or something and see what happens. 3 Quote

Yea but they were produced well for a modern day pop/punk album. Definitely hit the mark with what they were going for. Like better than OMT, I think Trav tries too hard/overthinks production on OMT because of all the pressure? Idk. It's Blink's St. Anger level of bad snare, and I'm sick of Travis wanting everybody to think he wrote this and that. It's a new thing with producers, super irritating. 1 1 Quote

Much more tame snare that's forsure and guitars are not using old blink emulators they talked about. Much more a pop/hip hop sounding album with that modern pop punk sound. Travis absolutely nailed that one. Listening to it now. OMT is a clusterfuck of Travis probably over producing. I don't blame him, that was a lot of pressure. They should have handed it off. 1 Quote

Lol I guarantee you they used emulators for all the MGK guitar sounds. No way was that chump lugging in Mesa Boogies and Soldanos and Marshalls to record organically. It’s all the same shit dude. That album blows. No amount of good production could save those lame ass songs Quote

The sound is balanced and correct on TTMD. He made MGK sound way better than was even necessary. OMT on the other hand. Vocal dips all over the place. Drum sound horrendous, especially the snares are 10X louder than necessary. Vocal harmonies sound artificial. Can't hear guitars on songs like Edging. It's a mess. 1 Quote

I'm starting to think they didn't do this because they wanted to have so much of it co-written and cover up Mark & Tom's laziness. 1 Quote

The Josie and Dammit singles sound like it could've sounded if it was to sound more mainstream. 1 Quote

I wouldn’t mind if the rest of the album sounded more like those singles though. I do appreciate the rawness of Dude Ranch and it’s always awesome to go back to. They’ll never go back to Trombino though. Tom said Enema was the first album that actually sounded the way he wanted it to. Quote
Jan Mortensen Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 Rick Rubin is a douche rock producer but I swear it'd bring out some magical songs. Just give us a 5 track EP. They've done the same album deluxe thing enough now. Quote

But like you alluded to, I think the days of Tom and Mark looking for a challenge of any sort are long gone. They don’t care about playing the correct parts over and over, they’re going to take the easiest way out with pro tools and all that shit every time now lol. 1 Quote

I'm not sure if it's intentionally that raw or if it was some sort of mistake by Trombino. Lots of punk producers have made similar albums that sound better though. If blink went back to Trombino I'd prefer a more Jimmy Eat World-esque production. There are lots of better producers for that sound if they wanted a Dude Ranch type thing. 2 Quote
