Did anyone see on Instagram that songwriter Mathew Pauling stated he recorded about 80% of the guitars on California ? Kind of disappointing to hear that. It's been speculated for years, but looks like it's true.

while in general this isnt a problem

is just that, blink always as had such a unique guitar style trough tom recording the guitar stuff

its so part of that band';s dna, so when someone else does it thats not of the grind style of say matt skiba(in lieux of tom)

it realy can come off as something missing, i guess they determined that matt style just wasn't cutting it for the overalll style

they wanted those tom-less record to have so prob the right choice but its normal to feel slighted by it

and feel like when u hear it its just not quite blink becuase of that

I was too hard on Matt in the past. He deserves even less of the blame than originally thought regarding my least favorite blink album. Poor dude had no input.

i mean, it's not surprising in the least. he didn't seem all that involved with the writing, either. aside from a few distinctly skiba moments, he was sort of cardboard cutout for those few years

Weird way to advertise yourself as a session musician with main character energy.

Who wouldn’t want to hire him after that?

Yeah he didn't seemingly have the best attitude towards the matter.

Yeah, can't really blame him. He probably had no or very little say. I still think he did a great job with his time in Blink, he made the best of it and his vocals were awesome on those records.

Shouldn't he be allowed to take credit for his work though?

Yeah,  but he could have been a bit more humble about it.

The only thing on that record that sounds like Skiba is the bridge on No Future. That bridge is really good, but man the chorus on that song is awful.

I think he was credited and certainly paid for his work on that album.

I just don’t think it was necessary to reveal that Matt mostly came in to record vocals and only played about 20% of the guitars while he handled the rest.
I wouldn’t say it - but who cares anyway, right?

Yeah I mean he's just some non-famous dude who was replying to a random comment on his instagram about a project he worked on 10 years ago, I can't imagine he had any sort of agenda or thought anybody would ever even see it haha.

Yeah, maybe I just read a bit too much into his tone.

I thought the question he was answering wasn’t exactly in good faith toward Matt, so he could have replied differently - but it’s really not the end of the world.

What if he didnt record them on Enema either?

Seems way less likely. At that point in their career Tom was going to want to play and prove himself. At that point he was still ripping on boy bands that didn’t play their instruments. It also sounds like his playing and riffs throughout the entire record. They played all of those songs live throughout the years. There are several pictures of him recording the album. For One More Time, Tom is clearly past the point of giving a shit about artistic integrity giving all the backing tracks he uses and comments hes made. The band has already had producers and non-band members play guitar at this point , and tons of the songs especially on the Deluxe side of the album just don’t sound like Tom’s playing at all. Rubins were both heavily involved with the album and they had already recorded several guitar tracks on several songs for Tom in AVA. You can keep arguing with me if you want but I rest my case. Lots of Tombots will never accept what’s right in front of their face though , they could teach lessons on how to cope lol

I guess someone could've switched Tom's riffs to clean them up. I feel like it's more common in the mainstream music biz than we think. I wouldn't be surprised if OMT was played by someone else, but I wouldn't really be surprised if the same went for Enema.

I don’t think it happened but I can see Jerry overdubbing some of Tom’s tracks without his knowledge or something like that. But I am pretty confident that Tom actually sat there for Enema and played to tape until he got shit correct.
