Also compared to the likes of Disturbed, KoRn, M Manson, etc they were on the brighter side of rock during that time. the whole “it was too dark without rock show and first date” is definitely a bit exaggerated, rick, wanting the album to be successful, knew in general people prefer a more diverse type of album and since rick probably had blink-type music as a baseline to him, without those 2 songs it definitely would have felt like it was missing that comedic relief i’m surprised you think that stay is not as dark as adam, i think that the slight light feeling in the verses, coupled with the lyrics, really made them heart-shattering to me like that hope you think is there but is stolen from you type of thing (when the brutal chorus comes in) tom and mark are very sensitive guys and use that to make very felt songs and i feel that unless it’s a song like happy holiday, they always find a way to make songs that may sound lighter still lean into frustration and, at times, darkness Quote

boxelder Posted March 31 Posted March 31 i think the "dark" descriptor emerged from the way they wanted to present themselves via TOYPAJ -- the all-black photo shoots, the side-swept bangs -- versus the music itself. even tom's guitar work, which is often cited for being dirtier or more angular on the album, is really not all that different than what came before. if anything, the only true groundbreaking thing about TOYPAJ is how enmeshed travis becomes in the sound, more willing to be himself and explore a broader range of styles than on EOTS. it's always been kind of amusing to me that they always viewed TOYPAJ as this darker brother to EOTS when it's the album with fuck a dog on it. 4 Quote

I think that's something I used to like but that sort of bugs me now. Quote

Just Good Chats Posted April 8 Posted April 8 ah the pop disaster tour was such a great tour at the time, both bands at the dawn of their prime, when they were basically the face of whatever style you want to say they are headlining together, today it wouldn’t be as big of a deal since big bands tour together all the time but at the time typically you just wouldn’t see 2 massive forces like that be on the same headline together and then to have jimmy eat fries along with many other great bands was one of those quiet but incredible moments and like how the media kept acting like there was animosity between both bands really drew people in i’ll never forget billy joe big arms branding little chris cote on the “arse” with that pool table thing Quote
