What I mean is like ... use me for example, when I sit down to write a song I rarely do so using an electric guitar and the style is usually different than the final version. Once I build a good structure for it I work on the arrangement and develop it how it should sound on an electric guitar with a full band. I was always kind of curious if Joey does the same and that's why his music translates so well ... like violins or I Must Be Hateful were originally written acoustically the way he plays them on his solo record and the Lagwagon versions were developed off of that. Thibaut182
Lagwagon is such a sick band for sure! So many great songs and hidden gems too! My personal favorite deep cut though! 1
_Bagel
@daveyjones yes to dropping some Ten Foot Pole greatness in here too, Old Man, My Wall. Glad Mark's got great taste, I can imagine him especially appreciating The Caper's lyricism. That's sick you were there for Snocore, I keep wanting to bombard you with questions, but I'm sure some of the shit will be laid bare in the podcast. Yeah I would've been six months old when Snocore was on, and I'm across the pond so I'm pretty removed from the whole thing. Book looks like a great lockdown read , for sure

I reread this conversation this morning and I sound like a giddy fan girl. I get weirdly excited learning about artist's writing practices, it's one of the few things I ever geek out about when it comes to bands. I am aware, I asked a silly, spastic question.

Elisa
I have this long unanswered questions: what do violins have to do with the song? Maybe because the word "violins" sounds like violence?

Like when someone is complaining about something you'd mimic playing a violin, basically sarcastically saying "how sad".

So he's basically making fun of himself for his "lovelorn/pity me" lyrics haha

I don't think we have that kind of expression in Italian so that's probably why I never got it

daveyjones
i threw on hang and railer back-to-back today. jesus, hang crushes just as hard as the week it was released. and railer nicely follows up in a similar vein. it has occured to me that lagwagon and The Caper (All Hail His Holy Name) have never really, truly fucked up. never really declined. there are no missteps like NOFX's heavy petting zoo in their catalog. no "atlantic-period" bad religion malaises. no "jim's mad so here's zoli on one album" pennywise blemish. they've taken breaks when they had to, faded from view when they wanted to. but every time they've shipped product, it has delivered. All Hail the Almighty Lagwagon 1

All Hail the Almighty Lagwagon Blesses upon thee bestowed by our saviour The Caper and his most trusted apostle, the Big Bitch . You're right tho, mediocrity is not their bag. Stayed together all this time, didn't feel like they had to shit out records once their golden time was over (92-98). Even when that time ended, they were self aware - they always came back with something relevant, true to whatever stage they were at in their career Ave The Wagon
_Bagel
So, looks like I'm getting this little bastard tattoo'd on my shoulder. Minimalist black outline with my skin as colouration, maybe a bit of colour in his cocktail. I'm a tattoo virg, but lockdown has made me think - fuck it, if the idea is there, act on it. It will just symbolise Lagwagon, Bad Astronaut and Joey's songwriting in general. My body shall now be a vessel for The Caper
