I’m not a kpop fan, but sometimes I can appreciate the camp and plasticity turned up to 11. The packaged nature of it is what makes it appealing because it’s embracing it full stop. There’s some pop music in the west that is like that, but not a lot. The choreography and fashion can be entertaining, and the fusion of genres and influences (especially western ones) can be cool.

All that being said though, I can only listen in small doses, and I only do at the prodding of kpop fans I know. And unlike them, I’m not into the band members or idol culture in general, which plays a massive role in being a kpop fan from what I gather. And that’s the quality that makes it kind of cultish, hahaha. There’s also all the discussions about cultural appropriation, the mechanical assembly of kpop groups, and kpop stans’ beef with the western music world (BTS and the Grammys being a notable example) that I usually find more interesting than the music itself. Looking into all that can be pretty rabbit hole-y.

Yeah that makes sense. Many people were lured by the music and the aesthetics, but stayed for all the craziness that kpop offers. I also think that a lot of them get into kpop because of the social aspect - it seems like the most fan-centric music genre - and you can see it as an escape from the western culture.
I would watch a documentary/case study on kpop stan culture.

Not the right topic, but I really don't understand the hype over kpop. The music is so over the top and weird. What I find interesting though is that it has basically sparked a worldwide interest in Korean culture (music, movies, tv shows). So much that in my university city of Pisa there has been a boom in Korean university degrees and Kpop is basically helping to revive modern languages departments struggling with falling enrollments.

It all just sounds so busy to me, kinda gives me a panic attack

I will say a more controversial one, but Bruno Mars.  Bin.  I understand he's talented technically and good, but I cannot stand his voice.  Catch a grenade is the worst song I've ever heard.

Agreed I fucking hate his solo stuff. Silk Sonic are cool though

I don't know much about Kpop but aren't they just like the modern Backstreet Boys, Nysnc but in China?

If you can go a day without embarrassing yourself, while still posting consistently, I will give you $100.

I’ve never gotten the love for him either tbh

I never listened to his music either, but I liked that one song with Anderson Paak that came out in 2021.

I THINK his career conveniently took off after Michael Jackson's death and for some people Bruno Mars was enough to fulfill that void.

That's crazy, they definitely tried spinning him as the second coming, but he's just an imitation forsure and the true closest to MJ we've had since is definitely crowned by Justin Timberlake if it has to be a male.

thinking about how Jan had "no clue" the "K" in kpop stands for Korean

I have no knowledge of the band other than a few clips I've seen here and there pop up on Instagram. How on earth would I assume that? That's silly in my defense, Korean Pop is the best they could come up with?

it’s a genre, not a band.
