I think my estimation of Jerry Finn being the brains behind the band just went up.

this is a completely reasonable take, and i'm a fan who loves OMT at this moment. my initial reaction to teaser clips found some of the lyrics to be too simple and saccharine, until i realized that was entirely the point. it's specific to the band's experience, but wise with years of songwriting experience to where it's relatable to a general audience. keeping it simple, and repeating the chorus a bunch makes it stick. i will say that yes, the vocal processing is significant, but this is a band that's been using melodyne or auto-tune since at least EOTS, so it's nothing new.

I don't really have much to complain about music-wise...

However, I will say that even though the new take on the smiley and blink font is cool... I just wish that the album art was more creative than just a solid background with those things overlayed. Also having multiple versions of the cover (with each format being a different cover is a mess (though I am a sucker for the blue for CD).

That being said, I will give props to the digital version of the album if that is the actual cover because it is a bit funny and meta to go "This is not our album cover..." and it is.

Even though I didn't really connect with the Skiba era (and believe, I really tried) I will give them points for the Nine's album being great and even though the album art for California wasn't my taste, it was still pretty creative as well.

Glad I’m not the only one not feeling super hyped about the songs; was worried I was dead inside or something.

What I feared was gonna happen has happened. Tom’s come back and kind of acquiesced to the Travis/Feldy-residue sound - as opposed to move forward with the DED route ( tho admittedly, that was over ten years ago) 

I do like the songs, I just don’t love them. I don’t feel pain

I don't know how no one has called it out but the drums on the lyric video for MTYK and at least the 1st 4 bars are blown up and then it gets immediately fixed. Same thing with Edging but that's the whole way through the song.

 

I liked OMT but after how much I hated Edging they could've dropped a rerecorded California song and I would've still been excited.

It was a little too "on-the-nose" for me when I heard the clips and the first few rounds of listening to the song.  But it's grown on me a lot since calming down my expectations of the song.  The simplicity and on the noseness of it is actually a strength of it now, seeing as that gives it more originality now tbh.

Same with the One More Time repetition, became a positive.

The robotic element/effect or whatever is going on there that sounds a little overdone on their voices at times brings it down a notch.  Goes from like a 9 to a 8.5 for me on that alone.   I really like how simple and short it is now though.

Can you at least admit this is to why it is the case for many of us?  I don't necessarily disagree with any of your gripes or what you're saying, but I feel like this is a major element to why people (like me) couldn't get down with the Skiba era even if it's a simple change from Skiba to Tom.  It's not Skiba's fault either.  You just said it yourself.  Like those aren't small differences.

I hated that part initially as well.  Idk why, just isn't bothering me as much after few listens either.  I'd prefer it not there though.

I think you could argue that.  I've thought that many times as to another reason their departure was so long.  But Travis has clearly gotten better and better at what he does to come close to a respectable Jerry impersonation.  Which is cool.  But I do think he was an intrical part of their magic.

It's literally more like them reading love-letter, text messages to eachother than writing deeper lyrics.  I had the same experience.

Oh, I hate the double vocal harmonies on the OMT group verse.  I should have said that.   Doesn't ruin the song for me but I just much preferred the first solo Tom solo Mark parts  and didn't really like the whole "I Miss You" thing as much as everyone else is.  Not that I don't like the harmonies when they do them, but seemed a little too much or processed.

On the contrary, I LOVE Tom's california-isms/country even? accent randomly creeping in whatever is going on to keep the song from sounding like NOT still a blink song.
