But they are both on the same tier for me and both without Tom, so I just clump the whole era together.  California is about...California, so it at least had a clear concept that fit them here and there, but was muddled with Feldmann 'compression' and terrible lyrics and all that.  Nine was clearer sounding, but still filled with electronic shit and effects and about literally nothing.  Literally nothing, Black Rain.  Go fuck yourself song.

I really can't tell because I'm not a producer, and OMT songs are a league better than Nine, and the guitars do sound better on it.  But you may be right Nine was better produced.  I don't necessarily trust Travis much to reach a level of 90% of the other pro producers out there that have been doing it for their careers.  And I don't even know who did Nine, sounds like it was a mixture of people?

It was because tragedy erased their memory

I put on neighborhoods the other day. As disjointed as it feels at parts, it‘s still way above OMT for me.
I like OMT, it has some good songs, but its just a bit much. Every part screams for  attention, is way to loud and they barely ever chill the fuck out on it. I hope they make another album. They still got it in them

For a record that covers some heavy issues for them, it feels quite shallow throughout.

I just don’t think it’s well written and Travis shouldn’t produce a record for his own band because that’s fucking silly.

Ppl will label me a Travis hater, but I genuinely feel like the production direction is largely why it feels shallow.  Which is probably my biggest gripe with it too as far as the overall feel on the album goes.

Think about over half the songs - Otherside, OMT, Turpentine, Childhood, MTYK all cover some more serious topics that get kind of screwed with the production making them intense loud w.e blasted songs.

Anthem 3 and Terrified are about the only songs I feel like the over the top excited production fits the song with just fine (even then, the drums kill it a bit).  They would probably be as good regardless though.

It’s a big comeback album and they wanted their music to be louder, ‘punchier’, and more powerful than the rest of the music out there. And maybe to stick out on playlists. The problem is that every producer wants this so the standard has risen steadily over time and that’s why heavy music from the 80s and 90s is way easier to listen to even though it was considered very HARSH in their time.
Culture is a circle though and maybe one day music will go back to mixes that feel better to the ear.

I think Science Fiction by Brand New is the only album that came out in **recent** times (2017) which sounds like albums used to sound in the past.

Yeah. OMT is just an amazing album, the loudness doesn't diminish the great songwriting.

I don’t know why people mention haven’t listened in ages etc neither have I but I haven’t listened to any other albums either. Who puts albums on these days? It’s in the playlist and if they come on great

I strictly do albums. Never do playlists. Normally I’m just in the mood for a specific thing and i chuck that on.

Oh really? I can’t do a whole album anymore of the same artist. I love playlists. Someone make an album or playlist poll

I listen to full albums all the time, but I also like playlists on shuffle if I want to listen to music from a certain decade or genre. One thing I don't like about Spotify's shuffle feature is that I think it always favors large artists. I have so many liked songs yet I feel like it's always trying to play the same songs from the bigger artists that I have on there.

@Kay I'm bummed out on your behalf! Haha usually we're pretty spot on with our tastes, I think OMT is great. Obviously the mixing issues are glaring, but for the most part I get such deep happiness/gratification from this album. Part of it is just the unlikeliness that it was ever made at all, but I think a majority of the songs are pretty fucking awesome too.

I am not bothered by whatever "mixing issues" people keep hearing but I will say I hope they get an actual producer again for the next album.

Although the degree of control it gives them having Travis do it makes me think it's unlikely they go outside of their circle.

I'd like to hear all three of them forced out of their comfort zones for just one album to see what happens.

Only way that would work is with a big name producer with some kind of a vision imo
