New Tom interview with Spin

Spin went and released a brand new interview with Tom today: Tom DeLonge Says Blink-182 Won’t Stop Bringing Dick Jokes to Arenas Near You

Some really neat stuff in here, but some highlights for people here...

Quote

“It’s really fun and a totally different feeling to do that kind of art versus an album or something, but I’ve learned that I really like being behind the camera instead of on camera,” DeLonge says. “I really like directing the kind of symphony that goes into making a movie or TV show, and the cool thing with all of these is that they’re team sports with a lot of people involved. Sometimes they take years to do, even if you’re just taking a call once a week on it. When you’re making an album or touring, you’re in there every day and that becomes your life. So the cool thing with the film stuff is it’s spread out, so you can take your time creating all of it. Then when it’s show time [to direct], it’s hardcore for a couple months, but it really fits in well with a touring schedule. After this whole run, we’re gonna take a little bit of a break from Blink before we record again, so that gives me a little bit of a window to focus on something else, like directing.”

...

“That said, Blink will be the priority forever,” he continues, his eyes lighting up. “Look at this dressing room. How do I go back from this fucking dressing room? We have to play stadiums, because I need a ping pong table in my dressing room. Honestly, I think this is a whole new beginning for the band. With what we’re planning on doing, who we’ve become, and how we’re doing it now I think it’s really, really exciting.”

So yeah, this was a nice read.

Fun stuff! I hope they're easing up on the "no press" ethos a bit. I'd still love to know more about the reunion and writing of the album! Haha

Believe it or not, if you go on Tom's instagram there will be people begging for him to bring back AvA or tour their place with AvA.

Honestly, as a blink fan... I agree with you, I wish he'd just give AvA the years long hiatuses he gave blink (both times combined) and just focus on blink and his TTS nonsense while blink takes their breaks between tours and albums. Then maybe when he's older and (if Mark and Travis don't want to tour anymore) he can focus on AvA again. That's just me being a (still somewhat salty) blink fan though.

I never felt a bit of connection to AVA personally, although I guess I'm grateful that he did that AVA tour to dip his toe back into music right before the reunion happened. But in a world where Tom has limited time and energy and desire to make music I certainly hope he puts all of it into Blink.

Same, I only put up with AvA's stuff because I'm a fan of Tom's music and wanted more of it so I had to make do with all of his Angels and Airwaves projects while he wasn't in blink. Now that he's back in blink, I want him to put all of his musical focus on that while he's able to still do stuff with Mark and Travis.

In case any of you are wondering, big things are indeed coming that you may not be prepared for.

Good old, Tommy.

Please let blink remain the priority. AVA really doesn't need to exist outside of some type of one-off festival show, IMO.

This is true, they could release an EP or an album, if they time for it and it don’t coincide with blink stuff. Then maybe do a couple of Cali festivals if even that.

and especially if Mark and Travis let him do those little AVA elements he likes to do in blink then really no need to do AVA unless blink is taking a break at some point and Mark does a book tour and travis does whatever he does.

a really nice quote from tom. i hope it stays that way. it’s nice to see how much they’ve enjoyed this reunion. at this point in the last reunion they were already on eggshells. i hope it remains the priority and he still has time to devote to his other projects AVA included.

During the first reunion Mark would call blink their priority every chance he got. I don’t think Tom said it once. So I wouldn’t worry about Angels and Airwaves at this point

During the first reunion he said something as "AvA is my passion, blink pays bills". Today he is totally in a different place.

"We’re doing this in our best form, and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Blink’s always been a big band, but now it’s a different animal, and I don’t think the three of us really understand what’s changed.

Really, Tom?

I get he's being humble, but I thing it's pretty clear why they are at this spot right now.

I believe there are many reasons why this tour was as successful as it was.

The first and most important reason is that it brought something that might never happen again: all three of them on the same stage.

Tom returned; Mark had stage 4 cancer - he could have died.

There’s also the attention from conspiracy theorists or those who knew Tom from his UFO pursuits. And let’s not forget Travis, who married a Kardashian.

Travis played a crucial role in the pop-punk revival. Younger generations often look back to see who pioneered their favorite music style, and the work done by blink-182 between 1999 and 2003 in terms of image and music production is light years ahead of what’s being done today. All the drama and 'what ifs' also make this band incredibly appealing.

Lastly, there’s nostalgia. The world feels like a dull place these days, and going to a blink-182 show is the perfect escape from it.

I have never been a big ava fan, most of their stuff is horrendous, but there are a lot of tracks in the later years with Ilan on board that are really damn good, and there's stuff on Lifeforms I really prefer to a lot of OMT.

I wouldn't want AVA over blink in any fashion, but I'd like a few more weirder Tom songs occasionally and I don't think current blink wants to do anything 'unsafe' so, AVA is the outlet for that. Also, if he does still do AVA, maybe some of his absolutely worse synth heavy nonsence will be filtered there instead of through blink.

Yeah, people on Reddit were so nice to bring this old Modlife video (from 2009) back up, but the way Tom talked about blink-182 then versus now is completely night and day:

That being said, I'm glad things are better now than they were back then when it comes to Tom's attitude with blink-182 and his (blink-182) bandmates.
