Not a doubt in my mind. It depends. Some of those songs would sound good with Tom on it, like California, Bored To Death, Hey I’m Sorry, long lost feeling Some would sound just as dumb as songs like See You, Cut Me Off. So no, leave me alone today, plz? 1 Quote

He doesn’t even play the right chords it’s clear he didn’t record that song on guitar If you truly have convinced your clown posse that Tom is not behind Dance With Me, If you never left, MTYK, WWWY, Edging,Terrified riffs I can’t help you. Jan Mortensen Posted July 19, 2025 Posted July 19, 2025 Shout out to California for not doing the ALL CAPS thing though. I don’t get that one and it’s a bit annoying. Quote

Na I don’t believe he recorded MTYK. Not his style at all and if you look at him perform it live he depends entirely on the backing tracks. Plenty of the filler songs are def not him on guitar Quote

I'm not sure if I ever said this here, but I actually have some doubts about Edging. Not about all guitar parts. Quote
Electrical Substation Posted July 19, 2025 Posted July 19, 2025 I feel like the Rubins recorded the guitars for half that album. I have no way to prove it so im not gonna get nasty but it’s just my theory and there are reasons to believe. 1 Quote

At least with Skiba they had an excuse for needing some help and direction Agree wholeheartedly. Tom was very critical in that one post on Facebook in 2016 about the band using outside songwriters was an “indication of their differences”. I think the reality is that Mark’s diagnosis proved that time (a frequent blink topic) is finite. For Tom coming back into the fold, he decided to be game with the songwriting arrangement to keep the peace. It leaves me feeling a little apprehensive seeing his name next to writers for Biebs and Miley Cyrus. Part of me wonders if it’s still an extension of walking on eggshells, with Tom unwilling to voice his displeasure with it. But just as likely, it can be that he is less invested in the band as a creative force and more invested in his friend, and is willing to do whatever it takes to unite them again, whether that’s for emotional or financial purposes. i will say that some of the riffs and high water marks on OMT (riffs in DWM, WWWY, the entirety of turpentine) are distinctly Tom, songwriter help or no. 1 Quote

Yea some of the riffs defintiely are Tom. I think If You Never Left is one of the most classic Tom riff’s we’ve heard in a while Quote

I remember Aaron saying he came up with a chord or two for Childhood and a few other things - but not that he actually recorded it. But that’s also part of a producer’s job... to guide the artist toward a better path, or a “better” one. Also, when One More Time was released - or maybe it was just the preview - I remember saying I wasn’t sure it was Tom playing that guitar. I even thought it might’ve been Mark or Travis. I probably got hit with a few clown reactions for that, but I don’t really remember. Maybe not. Who cares? Quote
Jan Mortensen Posted July 19, 2025 Posted July 19, 2025 Wanting to downplay Tom’s ‘magic’ in the band, one of the founding members.. is equally if not more weird than just being a big fan of Tom, on a blink182 message board. just tossing that out there 1 1 Quote

To me, at this point at least, “Heart’s All Gone”, although not the best blink song, was one of the realest ones Mark ever wrote. It was clear to him his hearts simply not in it anymore (Tom). OMT was definitely a bit more of a celebration/homage album by blink than anything else. Which is why it’s cool, stands on its own, but nothing like the heyday. In an odd way, that’s what makes me like California more than I used to, it was a genuine effort (albeit shitty, lazy, uninspiring, all the flaws). It was still a ‘real’ album by Mark/Matt/Travis/Feldy. I also do think Tom got a tad jealous a bit at BTD success. They really are like a toxic relationship. Quote

What makes Other Side sound like it's from the California era, rather than from a different era with Travis producing and a new team of engineers? I'm just genuinely curious. Anthem Part 3 wasn’t actually Aaron Rubin’s idea - he just saved the file with that name as a working title, and it ended up sticking 2 Quote

I still have a soft spot for California, it was just Deluxe & Nine that saturated it more. Definitely some stinkers, at least a little bit of heart in it and that goes a long way. I didn’t hate the concept about California either, even if it’s a little generic. Way better than Nine, Deluxe had some better songs but was pointless and a cash grab. All 3 fall well-short of OMT though. Which all fall well-short of Hoods, at this point Spoiler DR/Enema/ST Toypaj NH OMT Pt. 2 Cali Deluxe Nine Quote

I can't agree on Otherside. Otherside sounds like a Mark sounding song. Could it be on California? I guess. But that's because half of California is just Mark sounding songs, with glossier production. Otherside most importantly isn't about generic pop punk themes, it's about his bass tech, and it honestly pulls at the heart strings a bit to hear him sounding pretty genuine "see you on the other side' - with Mark being so close to death recently, you can feel that come out a bit, his terms with all that stuff. It holds way more depth than 99% of California. Otherside could be any Mark song at any time. Travis just ruins it with that damn loud drum sound, otherwise it's top 1 on the album. Also, have a freak out if you must, but Rubin, Tom's longtime friend, helping Blink doesn't bother me as much as 'outside songwriting teams' who did stuff for Miley Cyrus and feels more like Finn helping than that. Plus he seems to be way more chill and a general fan of blink than most these other songwriters and keeps Tom in check. 4 1 Quote
