  1. This is such an Oli thing to say, dude. you're better than that. What's next? Liberal snowflakes hate California too?
  2. I've always thought those things were creepy af. Exactly, sad but true.
  3. yeah that's definitely an issue with international releases. no idea why.
  4. Hmm, well I'll move forward with week 4 anyway. @Patient #48273 , fancy taking a stab at this? The new thread will be Thursday. I just need you to PM me the record, preferably with youtube / spotify / Apple Music links, and let me know why you chose it for the music club.
  5. I love both of those, when Mark just starts ranting towards the end of WYFG it cracks me up every time and happy holidays is catchy as hell. It's also like an actual full song, not a one liner with instruments. I love built this pool though, to be fair. Probably the best thing from all of the California era.
  6. That's actually funnier than the original. The horns sound fucking awful though.
  7. Really? worked for Spotify UK, that's weird / annoying. problem with international releases I guess.
  8. It's been like half a week, anyone else had a chance to give it a spin yet? I don't want this club to die on week 3 haha
  9. I'd respond but a lot of people have already said what I meant so, yeah, sod it haha
  10. I like WYHSB but it's never been a perfect record for me. a few great songs, a few snorers, a few boring instrumental choices. It's was earnest and honest which I appreciated, but it really showed the shallowness of Mark's capabilities as a musician. I will take the +44 record over basically all AVA releases and California easily, but it doesn't meet my blink standards either.
  11. I'm sorry, but no. that's just not true. How many truly awful bands are famous right now? How many feldy factory cookie cutter bullshit is making bank when decent songwriters get nowhere? It's luck, networking, marketing and opportunity. Talent is no longer apart of the equation. You're more likely to gain success if you're reasonably attractive and can just about hold a note over being genuinely talented at what you do. One look at the music industry is evidence of that. I'm surprised someone who has invested like you have into your art sees it as a "well, I'm just not good enough" angle. with the amount of absolute crap raking it in at the moment, if I viewed my music that way, I'd basically give up completely.
  12. It's frankly a fucking awful time to be a musician, actually. Internet is massively oversaturated with small artists, no one leaves there homes to see small shows anymore, and a musician now has to be more than talented and hardworking - they have to be marketing experts too with a lot of money, or else it's practically never going to happen for them. I spent a stupid amount of money time and effort on my EP release. I've been an artists for over 15 years - wanna know how much I made through online sales and streaming? $8. I'm not saying my music is the best ever or anything, but that record deserves more than 8 goddamn dollars. And I am also a big believer in not selling out, because the quality does decline - I really struggle to think of an artist who's songwriting is more authentic and better after signing to a major. As soon as you have suits involved they will chop up your songs completely to fit the mainstream appeal - I had one rep hear an old collection of my songs and he sent me a letter basically telling me how to rewrite them to sell - songs aren't products that should be altered for mass appeal. My songs mean the world to me, they're artistic expression, and art should never be compromised for money. Yes, all artists should strive for success, but I think it's perfectly reasonable to want to stay true to your art - that's why you start writing and playing in the first place. Without that, whats it actually for? Who is it for? Idk if I see this differently because im a songwriter or something, but that's how I see it.
  13. Tom is right though, there's not exactly anywhere left for blink to 'go' in regards to success, so they kind of had the power and financial freedom to take risks and do whatever they liked. I may not like what he wanted to do with blink in that regard but I think it's a solid point that blinks footprint is firmly in the ground, no matter what they do.
  14. Yeah me too, if they'll let Green Day in, they'll let blink in.
  15. I listened this morning on my way to work and this is probably my favourite music club pick so far - She reminds me a little of Emily loizeau, but happier and not French. The album overall has a very wholesome, cheery feel to it even with it's darker exceptions and I found it very welcoming on such a sunny morning. the fact that I tapped my foot more to this record than a lot of rock stuff lately was mildly entertaining. I have a soft spot for piano led music. I think the middle of the record is the stand out for me, From track six to track ten. "You Won't Take Long" was so hopeful and sad that it really touched me. "Mr & Mrs Brown" was genuinely funny and kind of surprising - while the record is very light, this one just took the general 'joy' of it all to the next level. I adored Xico musically and melodically and was frustrated by the fact that I couldn't understand a goddamn word, I really want to know what she's singing about! After All was also strong and a bit of a gut punch. I think the duality of English and Portuguese lyrics on the record made for a kind of alternative listening experience - The Portuguese tracks made me pay more attention to the general musicality and I think in some ways I got more out of it than some of the others... but I still wish I understood them. Her voice is a little strange and I think it may put some people off but I quite like individual voices so it grew on me quite quickly. Genuinely surprised that she wrote the Portugal Eurovision winner from 2017... I detested that song, I may have to give it a spin and try to ignore her brothers wailing. overall I'd give this record a solid 7/10 Tracks I'd recommend - Won't Take You Long, Xico, Don't Let Me Down (for the bass!)
  16. I'm looking forward to listening to this one properly, I've heard the first two tracks and loved them.
  17. MUSIC CLUB - WEEK 3 LUISA SOBRAL - "The Cherry On My Cake" @Ghost kicking off week three! This is a nice tonal shift for the music club! Ghost has chosen Luisa Sobral's "The Cherry On My Cake" I'm going to let him come in and explain his choice as it's quite a personal one for him. Ya'll have one week to give it a spin and leave a review, if you're stuck on how to review it here's some basic ideas - Love It Or Hate It, What Do You Love, What Do You Hate? Stand Out Tracks Would You Recommend It? What Does It Sound Similar To? Would You Listen To It Again? Notable Sounds / Lyrics In the spoiler is the youtube playlist, Spotify album, and apple music link.
  18. Okay gang, new week starts now - thank you all for taking part so far!

it's not millennials, it's everyone since the consumption of media has been sped up so easily due to the internet. if they're referring to the youngest generation than they mean Gen Z, where it may be true - but that's because it's learned expectation.
  20. yeah exactly, and that makes sense. he wanted blink to be successful, but not polished and mainstream. kind of understandable position for any punk musician, really.
  21. I find it hard to believe that Travis was a stable and reliable member considering he was drugged out of his gord most of the time.
  22. Plenty of people in successful bands don't automatically get picked up by other bands. Success once doesn't guarantee success in the future, it highly depends on the relationships you make. if he was as unhappy and difficult as blink made him out to be at the time, there's a high chance he alienated most established musicians he came across. you need to be likeable and good at networking for that sort of approach to work and by the sounds of it, Scott was not in the right mental place for that. Plus he was young, if he wanted some down time to sort himself out he probably missed out on a lot of chances. Plus the difference in blinks popularity with him and then after colours our opinion. Yes, they were doing pretty well during the Dude Ranch era but we're still talking early internet days where they weren't on every magazine or international news. he easily would have been an missed opportunity for some bands.

the issue with the offspring example and the MTV side of things is the genre we're looking at. rock/punk genres have massively suffered over the last 10 - 15 years, they've dwindled in popularity across the board, which is one of the reasons you don't hear / see it around. it's a very genre specific problem.
