  1. I hate it when people write TODHSHFS instead of the titles. Stop being so damn lazy god dammit.

  2. Very interesting interview with Steve Kravac who co-produced and engineered Cheshire Cat and talking about the recording sessions for this record!

  3. at least through 97, tom was a no pedal dude. the pic we have from the whiskey show opening for descendents in october 96 shows tom running two VL-1002's, either bridged (like fletcher in PW does with his mesas) or one on clean and one on overdrive. i assume tom recorded at least parts of dude ranch on one of his VL's because a.) it sounds like something he would do b.) trombino isn't a gear hound like jerry finn was, with dozens of amps around to try c.) they were at a rented at-home studio (big fish, encinitas, CA) that probably wouldn't have much gear anyways.

  4. Again, i know very little about music. I know a few punk chords. So i'm not saying they specifically ripped themselves off. Just what it sounds like to my own ears. But i'll be damned if that first year Bored to Death would come on over the speaker at my night job, i thought it was Feeling This every time for about 3-4 seconds and that's cuz of the drums. I'd get super excited to very depressed in the span of 10 seconds.

  5. liking TOTTM and not liking SOOHM confuses me...

  6. BTD "feels" like Blink to me, but more of a grab bag of elements from the entire classic era rather than a certain album. Like the guitar picking pattern in the verses resembles Adam's Song, but the chord progression and melody feel more like something they wouldn't have done until Untitled. The chorus is pure anthemic sugar rush Enema/TOYPAJ though. SOOHM clearly attempts to sound exactly like Enema but it's not a good song. TOTTM sounds and feels like Enema/TOYPAJ and enjoy that one a lot.

  7. it is, for sure. Xenu knows what might get lost when mic-ing and compressing and what not anyway. all i'm saying is that if i plugged in your rig and tried to nail the tone i'd probably turn up the mids by 1 or 2. There surely is some mid scoop, but i get the best results by scooping higher mids and leaving the low mids and low end kinda.... full, round, natural, sweet. i'll get my coat

  8. The only thing that matters is the most TOYPAJ sounding song they’ve produced since any song on TOYPAJ

  9. btd sounds like blink to me, but it doesn't sound much like old blink. people just associate it that way because they hear a recycled riff, mark's voice, and it was the first song to come from new blink.

  10. BTD sounds absolutely nothing like TOYPAJ or Enema.

  11. This is incredible, Mark goes into detail on the writing of WMAA.

  12. Yeah, the opening drum beat is completely different to Feeling This but they use a recording technique with a microphone placed right behind Travis' ass. On that specific section of the song, all of the mics used in the room except the "butt mic" were on mute. Then they added that flanger effect. Zakk Cervini (one of the mixers for the album) mentioned it in one of the articles about the recording of California. That technique was also used for the opening of Feeling This, so it has the same vibes of Feeling This on that specific opening beat. It's the same thing they did for the opening

  13. Haha I was about to say I agree with you and that I only do it for long song titles, but then I looked back and totally did it for Bored To Death too. My bad. It's very lazy!

  14. if married men can relive the shameful act of toilet masturbation to enhance the house of the dead 2 experience, then mark can surely have a rahmen noodles diet to recreate the mood needed to write another lemmings

  15. i hope for all our sake we never truly nail it. half the time i spend on my axe is turning EQ knobs. isn't the frequency knob on the ampeg the one which defines what frequencies the mid knob regulates? like i said, i feel the cut is in the upper mids. i'll try to post a pic of my grapic eq that i use to fine tune my amp which is set quite flat.

  16. Same! I have no idea what song people are talking about half of the time

  17. It's my position too. TOTTM is one of the better tracks on California, and SOOHM could be a Simple Plan song, super lame.

  18. Hahah not to dredge up old Cali arguments but TOTTM sounds simple and natural and fun, SOOHM sounds like an overly busy show tune. IN MY OPINION.

  20. A lot of these folks are approachable and totally down to chat and reminisce, sometimes it’s as simple as asking - most are flattered to be asked to come on any pod. If anyone thinks of realistic guests I should ask, as always please lmk. Mark/Trav/Tom are 100% aware of the pod, I think my best shot would be with Mark one day, but he has a “no pods” rule because he gets asked so often which I understand. (Unless of course Jim Adkins/Chris DeMakes/good friends ask lol) So just continuing to build it up until one day hopefully he wants to come on!

  23. Again this useless comparison of musicians' current output to old albums they try to emulate. You cannot write a new Enema or TOYPAJ because the times have changed as much as the people involved (and listeners) have changed. You cannot recreate 1999's vibe in 2020 - on an emotional, cultural or technological level (because they would use feldmann, for example).

  24. Well, stay together for the kids has a totally different picking style/arrangement than Adam’s song, but this is your story so you stick to it!
    1 point
  25. It doesn't remind me of it either, I just know it's the same picking style. People get caught up in weird details with music, I don't know.

  26. So crazy that he came up with the intro riff while trying to learn this: Can totally hear it.

  27. Of course it reminds Skiba of Enema and TOYPAJ. They've been using that line since Cali. Nothing Skiba has ever been on with blink sounds like old-school blink. I actually like Nine. Doesn't mean it sounds like classic-blink.

  28. I agree with the first part. But simple plan is about as lame as it gets!

  29. It doesn't sound like Adam's Song, it just has the same 1-2-1 style picking for the riff.
