Against Me!'s Tom Gabel Comes Out as Transgender

Recommended Posts

I have no problem with transgendered peoples, but Tom Gabel (Laura or whatever) seems like a very confused individual in general.

which is basically what I said about our transgendered conspiracy pal that led to a couple people freaking out on me.

i would imagine that some people who change sexes do so thinking it will "fix" them, but they may come to realize that there is a larger underlying problem. some kind of disassociation issue. definitely not the case all the time, but you can't rule out the possibility in some people.

Wow, someone else who thought their riveting views on gender were worth repeating less than a year later.   Also, if you have shit for brains, it doesn't matter how smart you think you are or how

Glad to see that your perspective has evolved.

Why would that "fix" them? Of course there's an underlying problem, the fact that they aren't comfortable in their own bodies, an operation won't always help this and to some(imagine not being the person you actually and hiding it for years) there are of course mental issues involved, but(I can't say for certain) I'd say they are the effect rather than the cause.

Using inappropriate and insulting language, while also presenting a completely misguided view of transexuals, as difficult as it is to say that you simply are not educated on the subject, will usually mean that people will "freak out on you", yeah.

They might be the same in your head, being a curious or skeptical person, but Laura Jane Grace's feelings aren't going to be hurt by what people on blink-182online said (unless she secretly posts here). Humans generally like to wonder about why others do the things they do and it's normal to want to talk about it, but when you're addressing the actual person who's going through something, it's kind of arrogant to assume that you understand their life and motives better than they do.

i'm sorry. if you are born with a dick, you are a dude.  you can never be a woman.

its simple, if you have a dick, you are a dude. it does not matter how you feel or if you cut it off, you are still a man.

It's funny how in today's politically correct culture where everyone wants to lift up people of different sexual orientation, that no one has mentioned his daughter's sad, heartfelt reaction:

She said she didn't want me to be a girl anymore—she wanted me to be a boy again.

I guess it's easier to overlook or shrug off his daughter's feelings.

Who ever said there were no innocent victims when it comes to a person's sexual preference aye

Yes people can become sad, I know my parents are having a hard time with me.  But with time what people will understand is that being true to yourself is worth the turmoil.  In a lot of cases it is the difference between accepting your family member or losing them.  Over 50% of all trans kill themselves.  Im pretty sure her daughter would be a lot happier with 2 moms instead of 1 living mom and 1 dead dad.

I understand your point, but I do want to make it clear that I didn't just randomly pop in there to insult him simply because he was changing sexes. I've been critical of him for many things in the past, but I probably shouldn't have posted anything in that particular thread since it was a more personal issue and he was asking for help. If I hurt his feelings I apologize, but at the same time, he probably remembers being criticized by me for several other things in the past, so it's not like my negative reaction to this would be shocking to him.

The thing is I AM educated on the subject. I have been to a couple of presentations by LGBT activists where transgendered people shared their stories. I have taken a graduate level class on human sexuality that spent a great deal of time on the issue. And I also sat next to a marching band drummer in college for a semester who was in the process of changing sexes. I still keep up with that person to this day.

The only people who freaked out on me are you and casey. You are the type of people who feel the need to constantly "educate" people on issues pertinent to the manufactured system of beliefs you follow. You see this issue completely in black and white. You ignore the fact that I do support LGBT rights, instead focusing on a personal disagreement I have with this person in order to push your pop social agenda. Stop using issues like these to feed your ego, it is more disrespectful to the LGBT community than any personal remarks I made to this guy.

To Ghent:

I honestly appreciate your apology.  What you said hurt, but only in the context of the thread.  If you recall I didn't get nasty with you and I appreciate the fact you have experience in this area.  I got nasty with Thomas, but not you.  I know you don't like a lot of the things I have to say; it wasn't shocking that you were there to say so.  I appreciate your comment regarding the context of that thread.  The only thing I can say about my sanity and expression before I 'came out' is that there is a large amount of depression and social angst involved in the life I have previously lead that very directly influenced many of the issues you have with me.  Many of the things I have said in the past are regrettable.  Some things I still stand for.  It seems that the issues of my deleted thread will worm it's way into the boards until there is some sort of closure; this is the 3rd thread in the last week or so that it has spread to and I don't wish for this to be the 3rd thread to be deleted over it.  All I can ask for is some sort of peace on the subject of me directly and if you truly do understand the plight of the transgender individual and respect anything that you have just read, please use the pronouns I so completely desire for the future of our conversations; incorrect pronouns can hurt more than the negative comments they are buried in.

Much love.

Will do, good luck with everything. hopefully this thread ends the discussion. it was wrong of me to make any insulting remarks in a thread where you were asking for help. I should have known better and been a more decent person than that.

I guess I do see it in black and white, Ghent; those that actually believe in promoting equality, and those that think they do but still hold some prejudice, whether it's implicitly/explicitly.

But I'll stop now, before I "feed my ego"  :<img src=:'>  So dumb.  I like that you mentioned me in your post though, you must really enjoy wasting your time.

Ghent, I honestly believe that you make so many arguments completely unfair by generalizing the people who argue with you.  I made it clear that you can say that you are educated, believe in certain rights.  However, when you speak using inappropriate vocabulary and comment on a person who seems of totally stable mind by saying that they used to do drugs and said weird stuff, therefore he's a psychotic pseudo-transexual, that's pretty offensive, and it's unsupportive.  Plenty of people made mistakes in the past but are capable of making decisions today.  He didn't say anything that implied that he was having some sort of lapse in judgment, he felt strongly about it, and you went out of your way to say that you didn't find validity in the situation which is hurtful.  Don't blame me for getting on your case about it when you say rude things.

Beth and Casey, simple question: Do you hold any prejudices in your life? I assume that you do. Instead of acting like moral policeman on a message board, why not address your own personal issues, whatever they may be?

I respect that you guys are trying to be champions of equality, as a libertarian leaning person, I am on the same page. But there is a line between championing rights and pompously policing the morality of someone you don't even know. Do I need to take a lie detector test for you so that I can prove I'm not holding deep-seeded prejudice?

I have apologized for taking old beef into a personal problem thread and my apology was accepted. By continuing to question my "implicit/explicit prejudices" you yourselves are acting prejudice. The problem has been addressed personally between both of us, yet you continue to pry.

Well, the fact that you brought me back into it, as well as Casey, by saying that we're just "always on your case", is kind of bullshit, because my reasoning for finding your comments offensive, I've made pretty clear.  He can accept your apology, but while you apologize you degrade myself and another person, and I tried my best to state the facts [while, I admit, letting frustration getting the best of me, but again, that was not a legitimate debate.  Comments were made in an inappropriate place that I found offensive]

Also, I'm sure I do have my own prejudices, but those aren't anything to do with what was being specifically discussed.  If you called me on something that some one else was struggling with, and I was just like "Well I think you've been a fucking lunatic before, so I dunno if I believe you", feel free to call my ass out on it.
