As of right now, it's still debatable if California it will even outsell Neighborhoods.

If you remember Neighborhoods sold 353k in the U.S as of May of this year. That's about 130k California has to sell just to tie it. I guess we'll see.

Even if it ties with Neighborhoods, they decided to stay as blink post neighborhoods, not go back to +44.

the fact that its been this successful so far alone would be enough for them to not switch over, of that I have no doubt.

well Neighborhoods is just as successful and Mark said he is very open to doing more Plus 44 back in 2012. so why wouldn't they go back to that for a record if they wanted? Matt will be back in Alkaline Trio next year.

Honestly, I'd be very, very surprised. FOB's last album is what they're going for and every single was released by the second month it was out. Usually labels drop the huge push by the time the album is actually out.

Album sales mean so little these days.  You just have to look into the zeitgeist, and it's clear that blink are more relevant now than when Neighborhoods came out, and much more relevant and talked about than +44 ever was.  Which is unfortunate for +44, truly a fantastic and very under-appreciated band, but all +44 really ever was was a continuation of blink anyway, so even though +44 will never be back, its spirit lives on.  In fact I'd happily accept a +44 song or two to be played at blink's live shows.

I would classify their success with this album thus far as somewhere between novelty and mild enthusiasm in the culture zeitgeist. Neighborhoods got them Reading fest. So I don't agree

Well let's be real Neighborhoods is not what got them Reading.  They got Reading because they're blink-182.  That album was such a dud overall in terms of people's awareness that it even existed.  No one I knew that was a casual fan was even aware of Up All Night as a single, in fact I never once heard it on any radio stations outside of the KROQ stream when they first released it.  Bored To Death is still getting considerable airplay, I've heard it many times on local stations.  You may not be a fan of California, but I find it very hard to deny how much more aware people are of new blink right now compared to when Neighborhoods was released.

This has nothing to do with me not liking California.

I've heard Up All Night on Sirius a lot. Both have been around the same in terms of popularity, but you know what, Up All Night had a terrible label staff behind it and it did almost just as well. I imagine given the proper release, UAN will be what, 1 instead of 3 on the rock charts. In no way are they somehow more popular than they were back in 2012.

I'm sure Sirius does play songs like Up All Night, you can find just about anything on Sirius.  But I'm talking about everyday people just listening to their top 40 radio station or their indie/alternative station, not radio you have to pay for, you'll find Bored To Death on the likes of those stations though, I never found Up All Night on any stations like that.  You're right, different marketing could have changed that, but that's not what happened and thus, I find it far more true that people are much more aware of blink now than they were when Neighborhoods came out.

Its funny you mentioned Reading, they didn't get Reading to support Neighborhoods, in fact Reading was being advertised by how blink would be performing a new song from their forthcoming album (the supposed follow-up to Neighborhoods/DED they were supposed to make with Tom), of course that didn't really happen and they just ended up playing a cover to fulfill that part of the festival's contract.

I like Neighborhoods, but I'm no fool, that album had very little traction and definitely wasn't nearly as noticed by the casual fans as California already has.  And maybe that has everything to do with how Bored To Death was marketed, but that doesn't change how true it is.

BTD isn't being played on top 40. So no, only rock stations (which are fewer and farer nowadays) are the only ones playing it. It's success is about on the same level as Up All Night. Hell, UAN actually had a higher spot on the pop charts.

UAN: 65

BTD: 85

SiriusXM is programmed just like any station. Not sure what you mean by "they play anything".

Now it could rise, but given that this album actually had a good label behind it, I can at least say these songs are on par with each other in terms of "popularity". I'd say their pre-reunion success got them Reading really. But I can't see them headlining that festival again any time soon. I'm surprised they did it the first time.

BTD is definitely being played on the top 40 station near where I live, granted it's not actually in the overall top 40 current songs, but some of those stations have leeway to play songs that are popular on other charts especially if it vibes with what currently is in the top 40.  You can point out facts and figures all you want, that doesn't change how much more I'm hearing casuals talk about new blink right now compared to when Neighborhoods came out.  It's just much more a part of the zeitgeist than Neighborhoods ever was.

It's certainly not bad.  And I wish it was more of a success and I wish it did get noticed and talked about more by the public at large.  But my personal opinion on either of these albums is not really what I'm discussing here.

BTD has been #1 on the alt charts for like 10 weeks.

California is the #1 rock album on itunes

California is still in the top 15 overall on both the itunes and Billboard album charts.

The second single hasn't even come out yet. which, depending on which one they pick, could be a cross charting hit (Sober, Home, maybe even SOOHM)..

The idea that Neighborhoods is in any way competing with California is laughable, honestly. And that's coming from someone who loves Neighborhoods.

Neighborhoods matched all of those (except number one on the alt charts) during it's release. I'm don't think this album is big enough to put the kibosh on (+44) forever. They will have time for it. I think Mark having writers block would be a bigger block than this.

First of all +44 will never return because they wouldn't be able to do it without Jerry Finn. If they were to make a +44 record right now they would probably do it with Feldmann, and as we all know that would sound completely different than When Your Heart Stops Beating. So I personally hope that they just stick with Blink.
