Another related thing that is kinda funny to me is how much they saw TOYPAJ as some kind of "dark" left turn for the band where they were getting into post-hardcore influences and making an artistic statement and stuff when... the rest of the entire world sees it as Enema 2 haha. And not just the radio singles they wrote at the end. I mean good for them they can view it however they want, I love the album, but other than the fact that they started wearing black clothes it was certainly not a departure from what they were doing haha. 6 Quote
whales Posted April 21 Posted April 21 in response to a few posts - yeah, I think the bit about Jen was very revealing; i don't need to know about their personal lives on that level, i just think it's clear that Tom was under a ton of stress at home and work and everything was made worse because of it. a lot more complex than either Mark or Tom wanted to really get into, so instead they both went with the "tom doesn't want to be away from his family anymore" line. i know i personally have thought i needed to make big moves to change stress in my life, then realized after the fact that its just stress/anxiety that makes me run from hard situations. everything both Tom and Mark did throughout their story makes a lot of sense from a human perspective. everyone has trauma and hurts people because of it. hopefully they can/have truly worked through things on a deeply personal level to allow them to be happy with themselves as people, regardless of the band 3 Quote
dave900 Posted April 22 Posted April 22 Just finished reading the book. I really enjoyed it. However, one part I was thinking about was the end of the chapter where they turned in their final mixes for the Untitled album. Tom says he is " hopes he never has to do that again". Was he talking about making that album in general, like maybe he didn't like it after all was said and done, or was he talking about the process and the rush to get it all mixed and mastered at the last minute ? I took it to mean that Mark was feeling a crazy adrenaline rush in that moment, and Tom by contrast was just drained, and that foreshadowed the issues they were about to face leading up to the first breakup. 4 Quote
Pirate Mexicano Posted April 23 Posted April 23 I really loved this book. Read it in the span of two sittings. Nitpicking, but one thing I was surprised that he didn't touch on was Simple Creatures and the time surrounding that. He has publicly stated in the past that he was in a really dark and depressing state during that time and that project helped him out of it. I would've liked to know more about his mental state during that time. 1 Quote

Ghent Posted April 23 Posted April 23 So I'm sure this has been posted here before and I didn't listen or care at the time, but I found the Lemmings recording from the Taylor Steele surfing video Mark references in the book. cool shit 4 Quote

There’s something uncomfortable there he’s not ready to talk about. 19 minutes ago, Ghent said: "Laugh at the bands we hate All the spots we used to skate Well they're still there, but we've gone our own ways I know it's for the best but sometimes I wonder Will I ever have friends like you again?" He was so clearly on fire in the dude ranch era 3 Quote

dave900 Posted April 26 Posted April 26 Imagine what the next Blink album would have been like if Mark and Travis agreed to Tom's terms and took 1 year off. The older you get, the more you realize that 1 year isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. In a parallel universe somewhere, we have the follow up Blink album produced by Jerry Finn and it is AWESOME! 1 Quote
Nosferatu Posted April 27 Posted April 27 I still think it would've had the same issues as Neighborhoods even with Jerry Finn producing if it was entirely on Tom's terms. Tom was willing to record a new blink album by sending ideas back and forth through emails. Mark at the time felt the music should all be worked on in the same room as each other. Although he did mention in that interview from 2006 that Tom suggested recording at his home rather than a studio and obviously he felt that suggestion wasn't reasonable either because they lived a couple of hours away from each other (which is kinda weird because a lot of people most days do travel to and from work/uni with 2 hour distances from their homes so it's easily doable). 1 Quote

Sun God Posted April 27 Posted April 27 lol a 2 hour drive to work is definitely not the norm for Americans. Fuck that. 2 Quote

In big cities where you have to take a bus to a train & walk a few blocks in between maybe….but not the norm for most of us. Quote
