  1. Being able to experiment and working with Feldmann aren't mutually exclusive. Is it likely that the music will be experimental? With Feldmann, probably not. But he played a major role in their chart topping new album, their Grammy-nominated new album, etc. Their newfound major success probably outweighs anything they could gain if they let Feldmann go. Especially because Mark likes being popular and relevant again. Plus, I don't think "Feldmann was a last minute guy" and "all of a sudden they needed a producer" is the right narrative...other people know the timeline of events better than me, but Travis and Feldmann were friends beforehand, and he wasn't "assigned" at the last minute or anything. The last two paragraphs are 100% conjecture, so you have no evidence to support those claims. The argument that they will stick with Feldmann has support not in all these press releases, but from what we know about the band's past work with producers (Jerry Finn worked with them Enema -> Untitled), Mark's behavior, Travis' behavior, etc. Little to no evidence for the contrary.

  2. California was their first #1 debut in 15 years and BtD was their first #1 single in 10 years. Add that to their first-ever Grammy nomination and the $25+ million they made from their US tour, and they are looking very successful, much more than a little better than Neighborhoods. Neighborhoods didn't achieve any of that. Plus in terms of album sales California is slightly more successful than Neighborhoods (408k vs 353k). Now this isn't me trying to bash Neighborhoods--I like that album. But because it didn't receive as much of the music-industry-measured success that California did, then it probably pales in comparison in Mark's eyes. Does their current success match their success at the height of their popularity? No, but Mark hasn't felt a strong inkling of any mainstream popularity since TOYPAJ, I think, and that's what he's always liked the most, it seems. I agree with California not making a pop culture dent. Not like WMAA or ATST at the turn of the century. Or if you want to go more modern, not like Party Rock Anthem in 2011 or Call Me Maybe in 2012. But I think that's partly because of the reduced interest in guitar-oriented music in casual listeners since the 2010s (hence the success of songs like Party Rock Anthem and Call Me Maybe). But I also don't think it needs to make a dent like that for Mark to feel popular again, even if to our eyes it doesn't look like much.

  4. I wish I could say the same. The songs on Cali kind of reaffirm a lot of what my friends think of blink: Dumb, sugar pop punk with no real edge desperately clinging to the past. While Neighborhoods might be more "challenging", it's way more rewarding.

  5. Peggy Hill speaking Spanish is one of the criminally underrated parts of that show. The other day I watched the episode where she works for Alamo Beer: "Hola, Alamo Beer. Si, si, el vomito. Mmmh. Si, si, la diarrhea."

  7. Sober should have been the second single in the summer last year. I hate the song but that shit is obnoxiously catchy, if anything was going to transfer to pop radio it's that piece of shit, they'd have been laughing, probably would have helped album sales too. the timing and single choices have really baffled me. SOOHM in october, HISALP in summer... terrible choices.

  8. I love Neighborhoods but I agree with @Ghent none of the tracks are smart single choices, none of them had a catchy enough single vibe so it was never going to hit well successfully even if it had all the love and push in the world. If I was going to throw on a blink song for people who haven't heard much of them though I sure as shit wouldn't throw on something from Cali, I'd be embarassed. I'd probably just put on Natives tbh.

  9. Agreed! Not sure how I forgot that song haha. I don't think anyone here enjoys California because it's moderately more successful than Neighborhoods. That seems silly. People like it because it's a catchy, fun throwback to the band's prime. The only people who equate an album's success with their like for said album are, in my experience, music snobs and the like, except usually it's the other way around.

"We took our Whoas to our NaNas and created this interesting NWaaana NWaaana sound, sort of like you're in your youth again struggling with Suburbia, John had this great idea to enhance them with an autotune filter and next thing you know it's the most unique thing Blink 182 done since probably Untitled."

  15. okay, but pretty much all of those songs are terrible and nobody wants an entire album of that (again)

  16. Travis said Tom was really into blink when he was around, when they would break though, he wasn't so much. So maybe he just can't be focused when not around those dudes. Seems like it.

  17. There's something hysterical about Mark heartfelt song about family and everyone talking about banging his wife. In regards to the video itself I found Mark's one super boring in comparison to Matts. Nothing really happens. it's his wife standing about, he plays guitar, he eats a donut, he shows his son some stuff on guitar, and then he's packing. There was drinking goth rooms guitars dogs and motorbikes in Matts video! I mean Matts video looked a little lonely but it was more interesting.

  21. From that era music videos I loved of the top of my head: Stacy's Mom, I Hate Everything About You (Billy Talent). (Tatu) All The Things She Said, Butterfly (Crazy Town), Sic Transit Gloria Fades. I know I'm missing a bunch

  23. Wow, I miss the early 2000s. Still remember hearing songs like "Hate to Say I Told You So" by the Hives or "It's Just Porn, Mum" by Trucks. Bands like Puddle of Mudd with songs like "Blurry" and "She Hates Me". Then there was Feeder with songs like "Buck Rodgers" and "Just a Day". These were huge in the UK or at least the part of UK I live anyway.

  24. I haven't listened to the radio in years but I check out the new releases every Friday and watch the Billboard charts. Pop and hip hop and variations on those genres are in right now. The last time we had rock in the mainstream on a big scale was the early 2000s with garage rock bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes imo.

  25. I don't see VC going to a team to just ride the bench and win a ring. He actually wants to play 18-20 minutes a game and prove he can contribute. I honestly don't know why he didn't go back to Toronto or somewhere like the Wizards.

  26. No I totally get the fact that it outsold neighborhoods. I'm definitely not defending how that album was handled. I just feel no one will know who the Grammy nominees were in 2 years but everyone remembers I Miss You, WMAA and ATST. Hell even First Date, I'll admit. But I get it. This is a different era of music etc. I just don't hear anyone outside of my fellow blink fans talking about and it's been a year. A few people say they finally saw them in concert but nothing about the music really. That was my only point. In that aspect I compare it to how Neighborhoods was also largely under the radar.

  27. I'm talking more about those who don't even know who Blink is, like if I had to play a song for all of the people at my office. People who just want to tap their foot and sing a catchy chorus, ranging from age 20 to 55--I'd choose a Cali song over NH every time. Neighborhoods would be more rewarding to those who play an instrument (particularly guitar) or to those who prefer alternative indy style rock, but not for any type of popular radio IMHO. Most of my friends who listened to Cali hadn't really even thought about Blink since high school, so Cali still sorta sounded like EOTS/TOYPAJ and it was as if Blink never skipped a beat. But yeah, I get your point... often times I get an eye roll when I say I'm a diehard Blink fan, and people assume I listen to ATST on repeat and if those people heard Cali they would probably roll their eyes and think they've been doing the same thing since 1999.

  28. Yeah I have several friends who really don't care about music or Blink at all, but they were listening to California and talking to me about the songs when it came out and I can guarantee they don't even know Neighborhoods exists. California definitely has more mass appeal than the niche Neighborhoods record IMHO (Feldy FTW). Even if you throw out sales numbers/chart success, imagine your Mom or younger siblings getting in your car and you have to play a song from Cali or Neighborhoods for them to like, they are going to enjoy the Cali songs more. If I was hosting a big party with a diverse group I would throw on Sober/BTD/SOOHM way before GOTDF/UAN/After Midnight, and I LOVE Neighborhoods. It totally bums me out that Trav/Mark dislike that entire "era", but in the end the songs just aren't as catchy, and it's a little too much AVA for mass appeal IMHO. I've been playing the Neighborhoods record in the car with my wife for 6 years, and she only knows a few parts of "Wishing Well" (mostly LADADADA), she knew damn near every chorus/bridge on California within a month or two...

  31. 70-75 mins is just unacceptable, I thought 90 mins was bad. No desire to see them perform anymore. Why even bother with new albums if you don't incorporate them/promote them? Strange stuff.

  32. I forget which course I am in Crash 1 maybe level 9 or so it's a super long vertical level with enemies one after the other that's almost unfair haha. Wanna beat Crash 2 before going on to Crash 3, which is also excellent. The problem is 100% Crash 2 I have no idea where to find the gemstones I found the red one by experimenting and found a secret platform. Might just vanilla run it.

  37. So members of letlive., The Chariot, and fucking Night Verses started a post-hardcore supergroup and played an awesome, unauthorized show at a doughnut shop: I got super hyped and then learned that Feldmann was at this show and is likely producing:/ Can this guy please get out of punk please, somehow how he has convinced even the best of modern musicians that he is a good producer. Or if you're gonna stay, at least try a little harder!

  40. It would be pretty negative because AVA has no new songs, no lyric videos, and no artist who painted said lyric videos that is selling to the public independently.

  41. If Tom said that about GOTD I completely agree with him. That song fucking rules and takes Untitled + bits of what each of them did after and makes it sound fresh.

  42. I'm not entirely convinced on this, because they put out Los Angeles, Sober, California, Last Train Home, 6/8, Long Lost Feeling, Bottom of The Ocean, etc. w/Feldy and all of those are pretty experimental and don't sound like any previous Blink stuff IMO.

  45. Mark & Tom seem like the type of people who when they are distant, don't seem to like each other as much. But when around each other, they seem to get along perfectly fine (outside the situation in late 2004, early 2005). I don't know if it's true but when Travis was in hospital recovering from his injuries caused by the plane crash, blink always talked about how Mark and Tom were pretty much cracking up dick jokes straight away with each other. Also, Tom would have the time of his life playing with blink during the reunion. But like Travis and Mark would say, soon as they got home, they were all distant again. I think both Mark & Tom are at fault for miscommunication problems though. As for Travis, the dude just loves playing drums. He'll play his drum kit wherever and whenever. Don't think he cares about the band politics too much.

  48. Just imagine how cool it'd be to listen to different mixes of other songs too. I wonder if different mixes of the smiley face album still exist on a hard drive or computer somewhere. Usually for my own songs, there's four mixes from the same guy, but he does the first mix and asks if there's anything I'd like changing, and if there is, he does a second mix. Usually takes him about 3-4 attempts for me to be happy with it, but I always save the ones I wasn't happy with. Wouldn't surprise me if professional bands did the same.
