  1. Oh look it's Oliver talking out of his ass again. Taylor Swift most definitely writes her own music. She even writes music for other artists. There's currently a chart topping country song by another band that was written by her. Besides, how can you not be a musician when you PLAY GUITAR? Yes, she sometimes uses co-writers, especially on the pop stuff. But so does Weezer, and you adore them. And as has been said, Adele writes and composes. Justin Bieber isn't worthy of the conversation. #oneliner

  2. That stuff is awesome, and kind of funny too to think that (in my opinion) that album was a huge letdown and didn't "sound" good at all. Tons of work but it came out sounding sterile.

  3. it always amuses me when people shit on pop music here, as if blink wasn't the poppiest music ever that got played on top 40 radio and MTV

  4. Nothing wrong with some good emo. Sunny Day Real Estate, The Promise Ring, Jimmy Eat World. Love it.

  5. Yeah, it's just the two videos back to back.

  6. The thing about Mark and Tom is, neither one of them are amazing musicians, but for some reason when they come together they produce something magical. Sure, both of them can still write good stuff without the other (+44 and BCR are still two of my favorite albums ever made), but for the most part I think they help bring out the best in one another (musically) and they create something that they can't successfully (or at least consistently) imitate when they're separate. Mark especially seems like he really struggles to write music without Tom, which I think is why he's reached for outside help lately. That being said, there are still parts of California that to me are undeniably blink-182 to the core, with the bridge of Bored to Death being one of the most obvious moments in my opinion, but there are moments of Box Car, +44, and AVA that sound like blink too. The difference is that Mark and Tom can't consistently make that special blink magic happen without each other. Current blink without Tom is still closer to blink than any of the side projects ever have been. But it's never gonna be exactly the same with him gone obviously. That's not necessarily bad. I get bored when bands sound the exact same album after album. I'm still excited to see how blink continues to evolve without him.

  7. You're sooooooo punk. With a username like @bastard and a clear distaste for pop music, you might be the hardest person I've ever encountered on the Internet. Def won't mess with you.

  8. Yeah, the music was irregular. That album has been talked long on here. But the sound is pretty nice, very well treated. There's an HD mastering which sounds better than the regular one. Here's an interesting reading, although is not the thread I'm searching for: http://www.emusician.com/artists/1333/green-day-a-simple-plan/41417 Edit: ok, I remember I read that stuff in this boards, but I don't find the post. Those boards are pretty interesting.

  9. I'll try to find the forum in which Butch Vig explained how he produced 21stCB with Green Day. Crazy stuff there. Like the same guitar line signalrouted thrugh 3 different amps that were recorded simultaneously at the same time (in separated tracks, of course) to get that huge guitar sound and stuff. Or how they set up Te's drums in a real room vith real reverberation to get that sound. It was cool shit to read. Modern things mixed with old techniques.

  10. That's why TPAB is great. Probably one of my favorite albums since Untitled, if I'm being honest. I really did feel that paradigm shift in me the 1st time I heard it the same way Feeling This cemented blink as my all-time faves. Like I liked blink since I was a kid, but fell truly in love with Untitled. That said, TPAB obviously isn't necessarily great for a nice summer drive when you want to forget about life for a bit.

  11. I'm fascinated by stuff like that too because I used to record very shitty demos of songs in my bedroom and I always enjoy hearing about and seeing how professionals record compared to my single guitar track and sometimes doubled-up vocal tracks. Listening to the separated tracks of blink songs that were on Rock Band or Guitar Hero is always fun because I notice things about how the songs were recorded and put together that I never would have noticed before. I also love Tom's Start the Machine doc and how it goes into the process of audio engineering with all the cool sounds they created by recording random noises all over the house. I love that stuff. I never got very into music production beyond the absolute basics (probably not even, I know hardly anything) but I'd love to pursue music production more as a hobby in the future. I haven't written or recorded any music in a long time, I want to get back into it.

  12. Yea guitar layers, sound effects, various synthesizers. That clip of Mark recording a light bulb buzzing as a sound effect for the base of hearts all gone is a good example of all the random stuff going into songs. It's not just guitar, bass, and drums, and keyboards, they use a lot of random instruments for some songs for background noise to give the song a tone. They did that more on neighborhoods, but you can hear it a lot on California too. Left alone and Los Angeles are probably the best examples.

  13. It's still weird to think that a bunch of people became blink fans because of California.
    1 point
  14. that's correct. my high school years were bad religion / NOFX / pennywise / face to face / millencolin / guttermouth / ten foot pole / pulley / descendants / ALL / strung out / lagwagon etc. etc. etc. one of the more interesting things about blink's career is, as you mention, the numerous waves of fans over time. people who saw them come up in the soCal punk scene, people who saw them nationally touring behind dude ranch, people who saw them on TRL playing all the small things, people who's older sister played them untitled... all the way to people who got into them only when they reunited. it makes me wonder, will there be a generation of fans now for whom california is "their" blink?

  15. yes. the blink i fell in love with is the blink that was opening for bands like pennywise. i think if you poll older blink fans, you'll find their tastes are mostly skate punk of the epitaph / fat wreck variety.

  16. The All-Star weekend has been going downhill for a while now. The entertainment has been really shitty and the dunk contest is the same damn thing each year. Every dunk has been done and its hard for these guys to come up with original stuff. I do still enjoy the three point contest though. Although this years group sucked!

  19. I don't think Mercenaries sounds full on blink. It's a guitar driven song though apart from the synthy intro which works so well iMO. The synth intro kind of reminded me of Asthenia a bit. I could totally imagine it as a blink song. Plus Tom is kind of shouting in the verses too, not as aggressive as Feeling This or Stockholm but he's definitely not singing. It would've been great to place it somewhere in the middle of a blink album kind of like Asthenia is somewhere in the middle of the smiley face album. It's definitely a song that goes somewhere and isn't boring like most AVA tracks. Mark and Travis would've appreciated it I think.

  20. I like New Found Glory even though all of their songs sound the same. Coming Home is definitely their best album.

  21. I've been going through this thread today looking for some new music to listen to. Holy shit this one's really good.
    1 point
  22. Yep, which is a huge bummer because they're one of my favorite bands. But I agree, they took a chance and did something different with Coming Home, and I thought it was great, but after that it seems like they got scared and went back to their old sound and have never dared veer away from it again.

  23. I also really dig Mercenaries. Not sure why. Thought the entire album was decent..which surprised me after a decade of dismissal.

  24. I been recording for 12 years. It's fun, it's pretty cool to go back to the first stuff you recorded and to the stuff today. Crazy how much you learn.

  25. HT and Meteora are sick records. Truly a "sell out" band it seems. What the hell are going to do on stage when they perform that song live? Awful.
    1 point
  26. Yeah I don't think that was necessarily a bad thing as long as Mark and Travis were able to keep it in check and prevent it from getting too weird. The combination of each member's unique influence and musical taste and style (including Travis in this) made for some really awesome music. I need to listen to The Dream Walker again because I don't remember Mercenaries sounding like blink. I deleted the album from my computer because it literally crashed my iPod or iPhone whenever I tried to listen to it. hahaha. I probably had a corrupt download or something, which is funny because I downloaded it directly from To The Stars when I bought their stupid blank CD version of the album.

  27. Mercenaries belongs on a blink album. Was so surprised hearing that on an AVA album when it was released. One of my favourite songs. I know Travis was complaining about Tom getting blink to sound like U2, Coldplay and shit, but I'd have really loved that with the input of Mark & Travis. Plus you know there's always gonna be a killer song or two from Mark that'd probably end up as the best song on the album.

  28. But, back to your first post, this VHS is actually pretty cool. Is it just the two music videos or does it have anything else on it?

  29. To listen to Hybrid Theory and Meteora and then listen to what Linkin Park has become, it just makes me sad.

  30. do you have a source on that? i'm pretty sure tom wrote that part.
    1 point
  31. And that's the problem, in my opinion. There's where all the "engineering" and tweaking shit comes up. That's why California sounds like it sounds. That's my feeling. I remember Mark (or someone in the band) said they were receiving lots of different mixes and versions. It's like they recorded the very basics, and Feldman's team did the rest to build the songs, so they chose the versions they liked the most. Thats how I understood they worked, based on what Hoppus said. And I don't like it.

  32. Most pop music is written by studio execs and the person performing is nothing more than a figurehead. I have no respect for that. zero. (maybe you can tell re: Feldman). People like that are as fake and phony as a strippers huge tits. Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adele, or any of them. They aren't even real musicians IMO.

  33. I think... I THINK Travis likes his juicer....

  34. I don't wanna have high hopes because it doesn't look like they spent a lot of time in the studio for the deluxe edition. I hope there's still some b-sides from last year because how long have they been in studio this time? A couple of weeks? and if they wrote 14 brand new songs in less than two weeks.. well, you know what you're going to get.

  35. King Kunta isn't just the best hiphop song ever for me, it's up there with any genre. Awesome song. Found the rest of that album impressive but a little dull.

  39. I don't even have an explanation for why I made this other than that I was super bored. There. It's super pointless but if anybody is going to enjoy it, it might be some of you guys. Someone help me be more productive with more important things pls. EDIT: Also this audio clip of every time blink says "home" because why the hell not: RIGHT HERE.

  40. Here, I did a supercut of literally just the word "home" (not in video form because I didn't think it was worth the effort): CLICK.

  41. I hope the next blink-182 album is another double album called Dude Ranch Deluxe. First disc is normal Dude Ranch, the second disc is all brand new music that sounds nothing at all like Dude Ranch. 13/10 would buy.
