We speak the same language really often in these types of topics and I understand what you're getting at, but I think you might be overlooking or overthinking some things in this era. At least with the actual album One More Time.

I think you're right that their era of deep emotional creative personal songwriting was sort of a blip on the radar of their career, but on One More Time I think they actually channeled that in a more authentic way than they have any time since +44 in 2006. With Neighborhoods I think they tried to keep up that aesthetic - they dressed in black all the time and attempted to write some sad/angry type songs - but the fact that they were so disconnected and awkward on a personal level meant that they didn't actually get super deep.

But with One More Time, even though they reconnected with their fun punk roots on some songs, I actually think they found a balance that feels MORE meaningful than just trying to stay "mature" or dark or whatever. Part of what's so meaningful about this era is that they have reconnected as actual friends - when so many of your memories as soul-level friends have to do with goofy antics and fun punk music, it actually IS authentic to reconnect with that type of music together I think IF it's a result of creativity and not cookie cutters and industry dorks.

And as for dark/emotional/creative songs, One More Time has plenty of songs that are in the same universe as the songs on Untitled:

  • Anthem 3 - Musically it's classic Blink punk, but it's somewhat progressive and more importantly, lyrically it's Tom reckoning with wtf happened as he threw his friendships and sense of self away over the last 20 years and vowing to never let it happen again.
  • Terrified - heavy musically, lyrics (in my opinion) seem to be about dying
  • One More Time - fully acoustic, talks about their betrayals, tragedies, hard-earned reconciliation and love for each other
  • More Than You Know - Fucking heavy, right up there with Stockholm Syndrome as one of the darkest/heaviest/most aggressive songs they've ever written
  • You Don't Know What You've Got - A tragic/triumphant song about having cancer and thinking of everything you took for granted in your life as you fear that your life is going to be taken away from you
  • Blink Wave - Not dark but creative in the sense of bringing their 80s new wave influences in, similar to Always
  • Turpentine - Dark and aggressive musically, even with some goofy-ish lyrics it's a sarcastic and clever song about low self-worth with a jaw-droppingly awesome bridge from Mark
  • Other Side - More conventional pop punk song but lyrically about a beloved friend dying
  • Childhood - Musically it's like Blink meets Sgt Pepper, totally unique in their catalog, lyrically it's about lost time and regret as you get older

That's 9 songs that I would consider to be progressive, mature, deep, creative, and/or pushing into different sonic directions... I'm not big on either of the B-sides that got released today but I can't get onboard with the idea that they're just coasting, California style, since reuniting. That very well might be their M.O. from now on, but I think they were clearly deeply inspired and creative and mining the depths while making One More Time. SO GIVE IT ANOTHER CHANCE OK?? Haha

as always a beautiful analysis. i appreciate the in depth response! i guess what i was getting at was that these bonus tracks blow haha and are exactly the type of schlock i wish they would stop making. OMT is pretty solid across the board aside for some throwaways like fell in love or WWWY. i agree with your observations on all those songs you listed… i guess part of me has always wanted a musical untitled pt 2 and i feel like the focus on “getting back to our roots” and making the guitars sound like the old days and stuff is a little too backward-looking. but honestly your analysis of WHY they choose that sound — as a way of celebrating their times together and what made them a band in the first place — gives me pause and a new lens to view it through.

i feel like OMT is the opposite of neighborhoods. neighborhoods is musically interesting by and large but lyrically hollow — and OMT relies on a throwback sound most of the time but gets deep.

I fucking love this song. It was in a MTB video back in the day and somehow has always stuck in my brain.

These AI-generated (I believe that's what they are) instrumentals never sound right to me. They remove more than just the vocals.

Well without the actual stems it's never going to sound perfect. Also I don't believe they're AI generated, but instead use AI to remove the vocals as best it can.

I'm intrigued! Can't Go Back sounds beautiful, that and One Night Stand sounds like my favs so far.

The mix sounds so much better than OMT! Still not stoked about being able to literally hear the pitch correction warble on the vocals at times (Mark on Every Other Weekend especially). I don't understand that at all. But the guitars and drums sound much more natural and have much more room to breathe.

wow, i really enjoyed the sound of every other weekend! can’t go back sounds really great, it feels like a synthesis of where all three are at musically, though i wish it had a stronger bridge based on the live performances. the riff in everyone everywhere is cool.

Can't Go Back sounds 10/10 and Every Other Weekend has a nice Cure vibe.  Not really a fan of Take Me In...it sounds like another pop song or something.

Can’t Go Back sounds amazing, already knew it would be but was worried the recorded version wouldn’t capture the live vibe I liked

"Every Other Weekend" sounds rad to me. Not just the "Friday I'm in Love" type of lyrics, it has that melancholic new wave vibe blink does so well. I'd melt if they recorded a whole album in that vein...

Actually I'm really impressed with everything except "Everyone Everywhere".

Take Me In will probably be my favorite blink song from this era, heard enough.

Ranking deluxe I can already tell by what we’ve heard

1. Take Me In

2. One Night Stand

3. Every Other Weekend

4. No Fun

5. Can’t Go Back

6. If You Never Left

7. All in my head

8. Everyone Everywhere

everyone everywhere I appreciate the experiment but sounds terrible and randomly goes from weird verse to chorus with no transition. If you never left sounds like a demo I have no idea what’s going on with the lofi guitars, song is decent at least. Love the cure bass riff in every other weekend, Left Alone part 2! Can’t go back I like but I don’t think there’s anything special about it that others seem to see

that’s my thoughts so far

My only issue with "Can't Go Back" is that it needed another minute or so. It has too much of a spacey, atmospheric sound to be so short, and it ends right when you think it will take off. Whereas it worked in a song like "Long Lost Feeling", this one would greatly benefit from either a bridge or a longer outro....
